RX-8 Production END

Final RX-8 production ends on June 22 in just 2 days. The 13b mass production is done tomorrow.

Thanks Mazda for a remarkable and, for me, very memorable 12 years from the First RX-Evolve at NAIAS in 2000 to bringing mine home in 2003 to this unfortunate end point in 2012.

Long Live the Rotary

Rotary Production Ends on June 22nd

Mazda announced the last day for the production of rotary engine, RX-8 as June 22nd. RE vehicle, first built in 1967, and sold just shy of 2,000,000 cars will disappear for once.

RX-8 Sports car is built at Ujina 1st Factory (Hiroshima City, Minami Area). Currently they are building their last Special Edition, Spirits R, about 20 vehicles a day, and the night shift of June 22nd will be the last day.

RE Vehicle began with Cosmo Sports in 1967, and expand the sales with Sports car, RX-7. as of April 2012, total RE vehicle produced is 1,996,511. This will make the total production of RE to about 1,997,000 with the last date set for June 22nd.

THere is no plan of RX-8 successor at this point, due to its poor fuel consumption. Mazda said they are working on Next Generation RE with better performance. Also they will start Leasing of Electric vehicle using Hydrogen RE as its Range Extender.
I translated the original article written in Japanese below. sorry for the poor translation...

Milestones don't get much sadder than that, unless they would announce development has stopped to save capital as well. Here's to the RE, long live the RE!

Rotaries will still be in production through the range extender until it returns as a primary powerplant as well.

Even though the rotary may go on hiatus again, I am really liking what I am seeing with Mazda's new diesel stuff. Can't wait to see the diesel tech in production vehicles.

Post on FB from RotaryNews:

"A very sad day for all Rotary enthusiasts around the world. Today, after 40 years of production, the last 13B and Rotary Engine rolls out of the factory. Mazda is holding a ceremony on the 13B line today to commemorate the end of an era. Our thanks and appreciation to all of those engineers, craftsman, executives at Mazda who made the Rotary Engine of such a great joy to us for so many decades! Our hope is that Rotary Engine makes a swift come back and our joy is returned. NEVER STOP CHALLENGING MAZDA!"

From 7tune:

"[Adam] That's it then... Or is it? What you're looking at is the first Renesis 13B to ever roll of the Mazda production line...

Some are saying goodnight to the Rotary... but wait.... I have something to say...

[Adam] I have a great personal relationship with Mazda.

They've supported 7Tune from the start. Recently, a senior Mazda engineer and I were walking back together from their HQ in Yokohama when he told me... "Adam, it's not really the end of the rotary. We know it's Mazda's icon for people and we are still working on our plans..."

I asked him if they were still working on the hydrogen model and he said "...yes and we are also looking at hybrid technology. What do you think about that? People are always complaining about the rotaries fuel economy..."

I said, "They don't care that much! Fuel economy has always been less important for people than their the love for the rotary engine technology."

I'm telling you - the rotor WILL be back... ♥ ♥"

Very sad, as I posted in a thread before, first time rotary production has actually ended, and nothing in the pipeline..

And I don't want a BS range extender Rotary...

I cant believe you guys who think this idea is good, I will never drive ANYTHING hybrid... just a compromise.

If it ain't a primary power source then it is not a Rotary or RX-

Regarding the facebook quote which I will not re-quote, I hope that permission was received to spread his name and use his post in an open forum. If so, then super cool.

I am on my seventh Mazda Rotary RX since 1973, street and track cars. I have faith that the rotary will live again. I will be ready when it comes back. In the meantime I will cherish and enjoy my 2008 40th Anniversary Edition.

So bittersweet.

Sweet that I own something that really never changed much over it's history, that it's design is unique and now always will be.

Bitter that I have nothing to look forward to, no "upgrade" path. The RX-8 is my first rotary, so I kinda feel like I just tuned into the final epsiode of a great TV show.

"Sniff sniff" I am going to miss this product line. I was looking foward to future rotary rides. I guess we will have to design and build our own now.
