stupid oil filter. ignore me

just ranting. so I tried to give my car its third oil change at about 7000. 1st at 1k, 2nd at 4k, every 3k yadayadayada.
the first time i took off the oil filter i could have sworn that bastard was welded onto the block. 2nd time, it wouldn't budge again. I just figured that I didn't oil up the seals enough when I put it on last time. this time, my third time, again the damn thing wont budge!!! and i know I oiled up that filter good last time! I rubbed it down like a korean massage parlor. now the filter just sits there, taunting me, mucking up my new oil and staring defiantly back at me. stupid tiny little filter. i'm going to get me the biggest oil filter wrench i can find and i'm going to get that s.o.b. off my engine. then he and I will take a little drive down to the docks.
bastard will sleep with the fishes tonight (after being throughly cleaned and packaged as to not harm the eco-biatch-system.)

Put a hole right through the filter from the side with a screwdriver and unscrew it out.

Get the right cap-type filter tool and it will slip right off.

I read about someone putting sandpaper inside the filter wrench tool for more grip...

There's no / little room for the screwdriver technique - best to use universal joint / 3/8 Drive with oil filter wrench with sandpaper or cloth inside it. Tap wrench down with hammer then use universal - 6 inch to 12 inch extension.

Yes you need a type (or size) "F" filter wrench!

I think I was the one who posted the sandpaper trick before. It works for me everytime. Another trick I've used before is toothpaste inside the wrench. If you get the right stuff, it tends to be just abrasive enough to provide grip. I feel your pain though RX8Bliss. I just did my fourth oil change and still had trouble getting the filter off.

This can be effective, but it can backfire.

I tried it one time on my wife's car and ended up ripping the metal can right off the filter. It had been screwed on so tight by a kid at an oil change place that it wouldn't budge.

Required a tow truck to the dealer after that, because I still couldn't get the filter base off.

Once you punch that hole, you can't go back. Since that lesson, I've never let anyone change my oil again. LOL

Yup, punching the hole is a last resort. Even then I wouldn't do it. If you think your tiny filter is trouble, try the first gen RX-7 filter on a 3rd gen. That's what I use. Nice and big, lots of filter media. Just "fun" to get in there and out .

When you put on a new filter, oil the rubber gasket and turn it on by hand until the rubber touches the metal. Then tighten 2/3 turn. It will seal just fine and you can remove it by hand.
