Low idle
Low idle
I'm having a problem with the idle on my 2004 rx8 stick shift. It's idling very low and eventually shuts off when I'm in neutral. I have to constantly rev up to keep it from turning off when I stop.
Can anyone advise me on how to get back to normal?

How many miles on the odometer? When did the last time you did a tune-up? Also, check the status of the fuel pump too.
Idle problems are never fuel pump related. Unstable or low idle or idle stall is usually one of these:
1: Low compression
2: dirty MAF ($5 can of MAF cleaner at the autoparts store
3: dirty / uncalibrated e-shaft sensor (unplug, wipe it off, replug, reset ECU)
4: Ignition failure
You ruled out #4, so it's one of the others. Handle #2 and 3, and if it's still there, take it in for a compression test, your engine is probably failing.
Mine did something similar when I first got my replacement engine. Mazda cleaned the fuel injectors and intake (throttle body?) and it was OK after that.
You are already better off than monchie, who recommended that, since you aren't referring to it as a 'tune up'. He is an idiot, so don't take his suggestions.

I would suggest cleaning the Throttle Body and Idle Air Control valve.

Search for how to clean a throttle body, it's easy to do. I'd explain it, but my RX-8 (and my wife) are awaiting me to take her out to dinner.
