Car Keeps cutting out at traffic lights

Also at acceleration sometimes goes and other times very sluggish and feels like nothing is happening. To keep it from cutting off I have to rev it up at stops. It just turned over 150K the other day and up to now no probs. Any suggestions? Someone mentioned that it could be a throttle sensor.

Ignition coils, catalytic converter, failing engine, or one of many other things.

What maintenance has been done?

lol... stock coils start failing even at 30k miles, changing plugs later than 20k miles should be consider a felony.

You probably have clogged your engine up by not keeping up with the right maintenance, do a compression test.

Yes, replace the coils, but prepare yourself to have a dead engine soon. Thereafter, you should consider acquiring a Volvo, or some other car that can better tolerate your neglect.

Is the engine light on, or is the LED burned out? Those only last 100,000 hours.

So......you went 63k miles without any coil or plug change or any maintenance?
Consider yourself one very, very lucky girl.
Heed the advice above. Coils, plugs, and wires first....................then go from there.

To my haters.. bse50 and oltmann..

F**k yourselves and go kick your dog, oltmann for the Volvo comment. How many miles do you have on your 8? Oh, unless you don't have one.

Mazurfer...

First I'm not a kid, I'm 57 yo mother, grandmother. Yes I have been lucky enough to get to 152,000 miles from my RX8. I paid my car off 9 months after I bought it brand new in 2005. It is and always has been a daily driver and I drive it and don't baby it. It's a six speed, xeon, bose, nav and it's as pretty as the day I bought it.

As it turned out my compression test was excellent considering my high mileage. Dealer recommended coils, wires and plugs. The CEL indicated that it needed a celenoid shutter value replaced in the manifold. It still was cutting out at stops. They cleaned the throttle body and adjusted the idle and then they drove it about 100 miles to make sure it wasn't still cutting out. $1370.00 later I got it back and it purrs like kitten. I love my car.

It is the secondary shutter valve solenoid. They did not adjust the idle, I assure you. This failure is usually related to carbon buildup, or oil in the intake. Make sure that they don't overfill your oil when (if?) you get it changed, as it can blow into the intake.

Did you get the readings from the compression test?

Oh, and I don't appreciate your hostility, since I've done nothing but give you good, accurate advice. I forgive you though, I know menopause is difficult.

It's pretty bold to snark at a 150,000 mile motor with usable compression. That's doing better than a lot of others on here.
Congratulations rxgirrl, glad the problem was relatively minor. You might want to add a post to one of the following threads:
