I purchased a K&N filter for my RX-8 but I can't get the original one out. Is there a secret to removing the filter? I've been at this for 2 days.

 

I haven't found a way to check the air filter without removing the whole airbox. Don't worry, it sounds like it is a pain in the butt but it is actually very easy to do.

K&N had a nice set of instructions posted for their Typhoon intake.

Just do steps 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10 and then do the reverse to put it back together.

 

I can't remove the box. The rubber flex between the filter and the engine gets in the way. I tried removing the box per the K&N instructions for the typhon, but it gets held up by the rubber flex.

I had a hard time trying to take out the box too, but once u know how to, its quite easy. I actually followed some instructions from rotary extremes intake installation.

Remove the air hose connecting the filter and disconnect some of the wires. Then lift the air box up. That way, the bottom two plastic sockets will come out, then u can pull the entire box out.

I had the filter installed, I like it. The car feels very smooth throughout the entire RPM

 

Loosen the hose clamp and push the flexible rubber hose away from the airbox. Then pull up on the rear of the airbox...

You are very close to getting the airbox out so don't give up now. After you do it once you'll find that it is actually very easy to do.

 

Could you actually notice a difference from stock? If so, how much of a difference?

I have always liked K&N, but i have heard that oil from the filter can get in the intake and disrupt the o2 sensor.

 

yes, i heard about the oil issue too, but many of my friends have the K&N drop in and I havent heard any problems from them. I think people that has oil problem with the filter are the ones that cleaned the filter themselves and put too much oil.

I wouldnt say that its faster, but defn smoother. With my exhaust and filter, I would say there is almost no hesitation to bring the RPM to redline..

Its pretty much a feeling, after driving the car with the drop in, I had a smile on my face.

 

So are you going to have a professional clean and reoil, or are you going to buy a new filter?

 

my friend just told me to get a new one once a while, so its come factory pre-oiled.

 

i changed my air filter, and i got my old one out just by forcing the air box open.

 

Thanks for the responses. The cold temperatures here in Cleveland made it difficult to remove the air box from the rubber grommets. Once I warmed the engine, it removed with no problems.

 

Congrats, on sticking with it until you got the job done. So what's next? How about a cat-back exhaust.
