2011 Ford Mustang GT (400+ hp)

What does everyone think of this car? I signed up for a test drive after seeing it at the NY auto show. Ford has something like a free 50 dollar mastercard to give out if you go test drive one of their vehicles after seeing it at the auto show before June 30th. The new mustang hits dealers in May, and I have to admit I am a bit curious about it. Probably won't buy it, but should be an interesting drive...

RX8 picture thrown in at the end for good measure....

30k for the GT with v8. Not a bad deal.

It's 20k more for the Shelby with 500 hp... 9 psi. You'd think you can buy a SC kit for less than 20k.

Exactly what I was thinking when I was looking at it. Funny how they had the Shelby right next to it as well. Hell of a performance bargain, and the standard limited slip differential with the reworked suspension is nice. It supposedly handles pretty well for a muscle car... at least better than the Camaro (which isn't bad), and the Challenger.

It's a great car. I think it's going to do very well. Ford did exactly what they needed to do to refresh and improve it without spending a fortune and introducing a completely new platform.

Oh, they're already adapting a whipple supercharger kit for the 5.0L... expect 600 crank hp for about $7000.

This could be the pinnacle of affordable muscle cars. It might not be possible to get any better at an affordable price. The current V-8 Mustang hangs with the Camaro SS and the Challenger SRT-8 in every test despite its 100 less HP. I'm calling it now that the new 400HP Mustang will absolutely own both of those other cars in every way. Chevy and Dodge will never be able to beat it at an affordable price. I'll probably consider the new Mustang or the 370Z if there is not any news on the 16x in the next few months.

I don't know why they even bother showing the RX-8 anymore. It now just seems like it is the car everyone likes to look at but nobody wants to buy.

Sigh all of those muscle cars might "handle good" on paper which is due to their soft, sticky tires but they will have have the agility or finesse as the RX-8 has.

FYI, the Camaro handles like a boat, Challenger is a joke as far as handling as well. Only reason they'd probably beat an 8 on a track is because their HP makes up for all the other flaws those cars have...

Yup... Id love to post some of Motor Trends videos of them testing the Challengers handling.

trust me when i say this the camaro doesnt handle like a boat i have one and albeit mine is now dropped and handles better than factory but even the factory suspension is good its no rx8 but its definitely not a boat ... most of the cars comin from holden are turning out pretty good ... the challenger on the other hand is a boat and the new mustang is REALLY good too i drove one a few days ago ...

Relatively speaking compared to most cars, it probably does handle well. I recently went on a trip where I had a Ford Edge to drive... it handled like a fat girl running to McDonalds.

Very few cars will have the turn in precision of the RX-8, with the exception of maybe a Porsche Boxster or Cayman (or a few high end superexotic cars). I've almost come to accept that Mazda may never release another rotary engined car.

What Mazda really needs is another RX-01, which the RX-8 should have been.

Back to topic though: Would anyone here buy one if it were to come with an independent rear suspension and a limited slip differential standard? I think I might in a heartbeat, especially with the interior improvements they have done.

I don't have the patience to discuss the whole Mustang IRS debate. Nobody here has test driven a 5.0, so do some research about the 03-04 Cobra and why the IRS in it was a failure, find out about why the recent Mustang's live rear axle is not half bad, and keep in mind the target market of the car... for god sakes, they didn't even use in the GT500. There are reasons.

Compare the pricing of changing the diff gearing in your RX8 vs. the Mustang, and then compare how much power and abuse that live rear axle setup will take.

the '11 mustang is pretty good, both in v6 and v8 trims. kudos to ford, it's definitely the best of the pony cars. the gt does get pricey tho; the base price ain't too bad, but outfitting one with some of the equipment that i like and it's pushing 40k. 40k for a mustang gt! granted 40k for 412 hp out of a pretty high tech engine and decent suspension tuning (despite live rear axle) is pretty decent, but ultimately it depends on your point of view. i do like the comparison jalopnik made between the '11 gt and the m3; they are remarkably similar in pure numbers, and the mustang is actually lighter!

Well that was a half *** attempt in not arguing it But either way if you have little tolerance to discuss IRS on the Mustang then why even say anything?

QFT. Ford's last attempt with an IRS on the Cobra, failed. Solid Live-Axle is the way for a Mustang.
