shop broke the "key"?? when istalling my clutch

hey guys,
i am getting my clutch kit installed.
my car went in friday morning. i was told that my car will be ready by 4~5pm.
however, i get this phone call from the shop
telling me they broke this "key" that connects flywheel and the engine.
he was saying it was worn off and blah blah.
i am not sure what he is trying to say with the "key"
but it sounds like sth that holds the flywheel and engine together and allign them or sth.
he was saying he will show me how it's worn off when i pick up my car but he needs to contact mazda dealers to find that part for me.
does this make sense??

They broke the machine key in the eccentric shaft?
How the f*ck did they manage that?
That is damn near impossible.
Even so, it is a common part at a machine shop and should be easy to replace.

Easy fix. It's just a mechanical shaft key that have been used since the dawn of the industrial age. They're used on everything from lawnmowers to eccentric shafts.

Old is right. You kids today...

At least he wasn't talking about a being from one of those last few Star Wars movies.

If you had "worn out" the key, they flywheel would have spun off of the e-shaft and you would have had a pretty big mess on your hands.

Its more likely that they broke or lost it in the job.

Though, that key is ginormous.
I think its 5mm by 50mm or so.

I have lost one or two of the Woodruff keys that go in the internal oil pump shaft.
They're tiny.
