Power loss issues, flashes, and dealership woes.
Well I felt that my experience would be worth posting, if nothing else than for entertainment value. This story starts way back last summer…
June-ish 2007: After almost a year of waiting for the right deal I purchase my 04 Nordic Green MT from a small dealer in Iowa City. After conferring with the dealer, the previous owner, and the Iowa City Mazda dealership I was assured all relevant recalls had been preformed.
Skip ahead a few months…
April 23, 2008: Notice that I was unable to get past 105 on a stretch of road I normally get into the 120ish range… I attribute to having 700lbs of passengers with me.
April 24, 2008: Same results as above only with just me in car… Begin a general state of depression.
May 1, 2008: Accelerating in 3rd gear, car suddenly loses power at 6k, flashing CELs and car goes into limp mode and limits at 7k.
May 4, 2008: After several CEL reads (codes 300, 302, 410, 420) at the local Auto Zone I contact forum members for clarification of issues that they had to see if I could identify and fix my problem.
May 14, 2008: As sure as I am that the sun will rise I identify ignition coils as the problem, I order and install 4 new coils, start the engine, only to have my dreams of unlimited power dashed by CEL light 302 once again.
May 16, 2008: Defeated I take 8 to the local shop that has done most of my work for me. Their diagnostic comes back with a very interesting result. All symptoms (particularly 6k power loss) look surprisingly similar to the issues fixed by the N-flash. I immediately call the Mazda dealership in Cedar Rapids, VIN in hand. They confirm my mechanic’s suspicion. I go there immediately and am told (much to my confusion) that they need to order some parts for the recall repair, parts evidently warehoused on the moon (lol).
May 27, 2008: I find out that I got a replacement cat (thanks EPA), due to the one I had being clogged something awful. This makes me feel better about having to drive a Nissan Sentra rental for the previous weekend. I then argue for 10 minutes with the “Mazda master technician” that the 410 CEL was not in fact thrown by the VFAD being removed and that my car would not throw a CEL as soon as I leave (which it didn’t). My 8 drives like a dream and I return to the land of the rotary content.
What I learned:
-Don’t trust used car salesmen
-I am not a certified mechanic
-The only pleasurable thing about driving a Nissan Sentra is the Enterprise girl with a nice rack brought me the car.
-Mazda warehouses their parts on the moon.
-The EPA is good for something.

Powertrain warranty expires at 60K miles/60 months, some really early 04 model has even longer warranty. so u might want to check
Emission warranty should be 80K miles.
Bumper to bumper, at least for most 04 and all 05, is 48K miles/48 months, whichever is longer.
