A $700 dollar trip to the dealer... well worth the money

I am only 17 and am still learning as much as I can about my RX8. I recieved a coupon from the dealership I bought my 8 from Pre-Owned for a minor maintence, or oil change. I had issues with my car cranking in the past and had them check that

So, as much as people complain about the prices of the dealer. I do not fully understand my engine to do any work and I have a father who used to work on American Muscle Cars, where parts were clip on and off. Welcome to Japenese Engineering.

So I had the 30,000 mile service... $240.60 after coupon
-Oil Change/Filter
-Inspection of Engine Belts
-Service of Both Brakes
-Replacement of Brake Fluids
-Rotation of Tires/pressure adjustment
-Replacement of Trans Fluid
-Visual Inspection of all engine compenents
-Refill all fluids
Fuel Injectors Serviced... 137.00
-Cleans Injectors and Fuel Rails and Lines
Replacement of Spark Plugs... $247.00
-All 4 plugs replaced

Total came to just under $700
I say my 8 spent a wonderful day at the spa
They also readjusted the clutch from what I can tell. The car reacts and has a lot more power... Its fun spinning tires without trying.

do you know how ridiculously easy they are to change? all you do is turn the driver's side tire.

well worth it? haha. no.

Yea...and it didn't fall under some random TSB for plugs and injectors? And $246 for an Fluid Change and a tire rotation? For all that work you should be looking at prolly what...$200 total?

stop bashing the guy man..

Some people dont want to mess with this kind of stuff.. maybe he wants it to be in record that he has actually serviced his car in case something bad happens ..

nobody is doing any bashing here. they are just saying he could have saved a lot of his hard earned money by doing it himself. i feel sorry for him. the stealership took him to the cleaners because he didn't know any better.

Hmmm, FP Plus costs about $50 for a gallon, that will last a long long time.
I pay $7 per spark plug, just need 4.
Transmission fluid is like $15. Same goes for brake fluid.
Oil change and filter is about $30.

Definitely read up on the forums here and start doing this stuff yourself. If you do it yourself, you will know your car, and know the job is done right.

$700 for that huh? Could have bought a nice gently used set of rims or a full exhaust.

I wouldn't bash him. IMHO, the only pure ripoff is the fuel injector service. There is absolutely no reason to do that on a car with such low mileage. Most of the high cost of the spark plugs is Mazda's list price for plugs.

The basic $240 30K service isn't bad. You'd pay $100 for a brake fluid flush most places. My dealer gave me an estimate of $250 to change transmission and rear end oil...an estimate that's pretty high, but makes me think that $240 for all the fluids listed is a reasonable deal.

Yeah, you can do all of this for a couple of hours work and the cost of the fluids. I need to see if my back will be healed enough by July to do the gear oil myself.

Tranny Fluid and flush on my Stealth cost me $58 at a local shop. Sorry...not biting on the $250 anytime soon.

Getting ripped off by stealership and learning a life lesson...PRICELESS

Don't worry kid it happened to me a couple times on various occasions (sometimes you have no choice but to bite the bullet) but you come away with a little bit of piece of mind that nothing is wrong with your car and when or if you sell it you can say all scheduled maintenance was taken care of. Read up on the DIY sections and enjoy your ride.

+1 on dealer taking advantage of your age. grow a beard or have your dad go with you/for you if youre not gonna do it yourself. another alternative solution is get to know someone that works at a dealer or goodyear, etc. gotta get the hookups

Shoot i had a little damage to my 3 just a little bit ago and the dealership wanted to charge me $776 to install a new engine shield, front engine shield and left engine shield. on top of that replace a broken fog lamp. (Hit something on the freeway and it tore the engine shield right out from under my car.) Well i ended up talking to a friend who works at a dealership and got me the parts and helping put it on for little then half of what they are charging me. Now that is a deal :-D

Frankly, no, none at all.

Just learn that as much as we love our RX-8s and Miatas, etc, and the whole Zoom Zoom brand, the local dealer and their service departments are just local business hiring relatively cheap labor and trying to maximize profits from unknowing customers. The less you know, the better for them.

Most of the stuff they did is easy to learn to do yourself and actually fun for a lot of people. You'll begin to learn by doing, just be careful, read up, ask questions, use the right tools. You'll end up knowing and loving your car much more, save a heck of a lot of money that is better spent on girlfriends and college, etc...

Good luck!
