Horsepower (232 versus 247), weight distribution, stopping distance, handling - all extremely close.

The Cayman S gives Porsche owners the option to add FI, but it's not cheap.

In base form, the cars are quite similar in specs and dynamics.

 

It's only about 6k to get the rx-8 over 300 whp.

 

i love the rx8.

but.. the cayman is sexier. just drop dead sexier. if i can wing it, my next car will be a cayman.

 

I forgot, the 0-60 times are very, very close, too.

mysql - tell me how to get 300whp for 6k w/out voiding my warranty. Once my warranty is up, I'm all over that, but will I have problems?


I also agree the Cayman is absolutely drop-dead sexy; so much so, that I think I may like it better than the 911 (blasphemy, I know).

 

^Without voiding your warranty? Psh that's not going to happen my friend. To get 300whp you need to go FI. which will void your warranty.

 

I think the RX8 is sexier than the Cayman, seriously. Oh, you also get 2 more seats.

 

i think the cayman is sexier than all but the latest gen 911.

 

the 997s are my favorite turbos yet....i think i would want 1 when im 40 and have lots of money. by that time the car will be old, but it will still be a beauty in my eyes

Paper comparisons are meaningless - ask any RX8 driver...

If you want to compare cars then you need to go test drive the Cayman - the differences will quickly become apparent.

 

I'll take the 8 anyday.

 

Ill take a caymen S any day over the 8...even a caymen non S. Sorry, but it would run circles around the 8.

Ignoring warranty, if you drop 20k on your RX-8, it would be easy to outdo the cayman.

 

That's one of the most bizarre reviews I have ever read...

 

That's because it's 1) terribly written, 2) extremely short, and 3) factually inaccurate.

Where it is remotely accurate, it stretches any remote accuracy to the breaking point.

Power? Down a 'few rungs?'

Yeah. The Cayman manages roughly a 0-60 time of about 6.1 - 6.5 seconds, depending on the source, while the RX8 manages in 5.9 to 6.7, again, depending on the source.

And the talk of the mpg difference? WTF!!! At most, it's maybe 3-4 mpg difference, and who cares about such triviality in a sports car.

The article didn't even bother to mention skidpad figures, steering feel or chassis dynamics.

Cayman S for me. but since my money should be channeled elsewhere, its the RX-8. Both are very balanced cars.

 

Also, chief of development for the 8 used to work for Porsche.

At least, according to Jeremy Clarkston.

 

Isn't that a bizzare review? You'd wonder if the guy is a moonlighting food columnist, except his writing is so poor, he'd never get a gig.

The Cayman is a strikingly beautiful car. And at twice the price of the '8, you're going to see far fewer of them on the road, which will help keep that exclusivity sex appeal thing alive.

I know we're not supposed to buy sports cars for practical reasons, but it was usability that drove me into an RX8. Accessibility to usable rear seats, and a reasonable (two sets of clubs!) trunk is hard to find in a car that handles like ours.


Here's a cut&paste from another review of the Cayman that gives the nod to the RX8 for handling:

funny, I am expecting my next car to be a cayman S

why? because I find the 8 so lovely, i want something along the same line performance wise. but I want the cayman's looks

 

So, how is the resale of the Caymen compared to the 8?
