Thumbs up Hymee Enhanced Sports Exhaust - My Thoughts

A couple of weeks ago I ordered a Hymee Enhanced Sports Exhaust for my 8 from Mark, got it shipped and had it fitted here in Adelaide. I thought I might give you guys my impressions of the exhaust after 2 weeks of use.

I have no pictures but I am sure you have all seen Mark's website. The new exhaust has Hymee Enhanced with the logo etched on each muffler. There is a also a plate where the pipe divides to the two mufflers that contains the number of the exhaust and other info. It's 2.5" all through and finished off with 4" tips which fill the exhaust outlets nicely. From the outside the only indication that something is different is the larger tips that stick out a little more than the stock.

I have read a few threads looking at reviews of different exhausts and one of the biggest "problem" with them is that they drone during cruising or are excessively loud. Well I can say that the Hymee does not drone! On idle it is till quite quiet, but the tone of the exhaust has dropped. It doesn't really come alive until above 4000RPM and then you know there is something at the back there. Where before the RX8 sounded like an F1 car, now I reckon it's an F1 car with *****!! During acceleration it burbles and pops and sounds great...a real head turner, especially under hard acceleration.

According to the butt dyno I haven't noticed any real performance gains, but it is definitely stronger down low. I have a rather steep drive way, at low revs the 8 would tend to jerk a little going up the driveway...but no more.

There are a few issues I have found so far. It did smoke and there was a bit of a smell a few days after installation as the packing oil was burnt off, but now all good. I reckon it has caused the 8 to burn a bit rich, but a tune should fix that. Associated with that, it the fuel consumption has gone up but it isn't too bad (nothing rotary owners aren't familiar with anyway!).

In summary, the RX8 now sounds better (who would have thought), better performance down low, much reduced boot heat soak. However, it drinks more petrol and there was initial smoking.

Highly recommended (and Mark's service was good too!)

Thanks for reading!

Cheers

I'm surprised you found an increase in the consumption of fuel. Are you sure that you aren't just accelerating harder to hear the new sound of the car.

Glad you're happy with it!

I'm looking forward to seeing the new Hymee exhaust. Having owned an original system of his for three years, I was pretty pleased with the look/sound.

Hymee's website still has pics of the older system on it. Whilst happy with my old Hymee exhaust, there are a few improvements I'd like to see in any future system of his.

I'd like to get rid of the 18" joiner to the midpipe. A whole new midpipe would be much neater and eliminate any chance of gas leakage. I'd like the hangars turned down at the ends to help eliminate side-to-side movement (a-la the factory muffler hangars). I'd also like to see some bracing/strengthening of the Y junction into the mufflers. My system suffered cracking at the point where the pipes entered the mufflers. I had cracks around 50% of the pipes circumference on both mufflers after two years.

I had to get the cracks welded prior to having a roadworthy issued when I sold the car.

Post up some pics when you can, Rimmsy!!

You're not using your car enough honey ... it's probably just a lot of carbon deposits that have built up. We'll give her a good run this weekend though yes?

I reckon the fuel consumption is up a bit due to it running a bit rich, Mark emailed me this as a possible reason:-
"The RX-8’s engine management system, like other modern EFI systems, uses “closed loop” to continually adjust the fuelling to maintain the correct AFR at the ideal level. This is only done at “light cruise” and very mild acceleration. You can check how yours is performing if you plug in a scan tool such as the sCANalyser I developed, as shown at www.performancedesign.com.au. But yes, I have found RX-8’s, like most cars, run rich when in “open loop” when the feedback adjustments are not being made. There are various reasons for this, to detailed to get into here."
But I also agree I am revving it harder just to hear it!

I believe the differences between the Mark 1 and 2 are that the mufflers are embossed with the Hymee Enhanced logo, and a laser etched ID tag. I think the system is still 2 1/2" all the way through.

I will post pics when I can, I am at work at the moment and don't get home until it gets dark. But I will see what I can do!!

Cheers

From the pic there doesn't seem to be an "end" on the hanger. By an "end" I mean is like a cap that's slightly larger than the diameter of the hanger at the end of the hanger? It's probably easier to have that instead of a bend?

Yeah, that'd work.

With four inch tips it's quite noticeable when the exhaust is off-centre in the exhaust shrouds. You just need something to keep the assembly centered.

As promised, here is a pic of the info plate where the pipes split. The Hymee Enhanced logo on the mufflers is the same as the picture Gomez posted.

This is not an ad!

Madkeen, http://www.performancedesign.com.au/ is the website to purchase the exhaust, can be done by email or call Mark on the number listed on the websites contact page. Also for fitting, give Les at Fat Pipes a call on (32857417), they are situated in the Kallangur/Petrie area on the north side of Brisbane.
