Hymee Enhanced Sports Exhaust - My Thoughts
Now the problem with mild steel is it does evntually rust. Even when it has an "aluminized" coating. That is what happened to Gomez' muffler, as it happened to mine (the original system that the jig was made from). When my "rusted out", I simply bought s stainless one from myself

I stopped offering the mild steel systems quite some time ago. But it is a little dissapointing to see a picture of the stainless steel system with a note on it saying "cracks here". There is no need to strengthen the system, and any suggestion that it is weak is misleading.
The "mid pipe", which is actually the intermediate pipe (the mid pipe contains the cat and the resonator) on the factory system is a mandrel bent 2.5" pipe. It is not 3". Wildcards was 3". The tail pipes on my system are 2.5". The flange plate is a 2.5" flange plate. In fact, everything on the stock system is 2.5" in front of the muffler. So how can putting a larger intermediate pipe be of any benefit? Surely only if one is to fit a set of extractors and a 3" hi-flow cat as in Wildcard's case.
I am investigating the possibility of offering a new intermediate pipe that bolts straight up to the 2.5" flange plate, rather than the short adaptor pipe I offer at the moment. The adaptor pipe works, and was designed as such so it would bolt straight into the factory slip joint, without having to cut/splice. But we are finding that these days we tend to cut the last bit of the intermediate pipe off, and weld on the supplied adaptor pipe, providing a "leak free" system as Gomez suggested. Like I said, I'm in the middle of getting some pricing of having a new intermediate pipe supplied, but of course it will add to the cost.
As for the hangers - yes it seems sensible to have lugs, but in reality, they are not necessary. If the exhaust is fitted properly and centered properly, and bolted up correctly, it sits properly. If a system is fitted and it doesn't sit properly, of course the fitter will blame something else. Just think about it - the rubber hanger blocks have enough flex in them to allow it still to sit offset if it all tightened up in the wrong position. This is just one of those practical things I found out from someone who has spent over 20 years making custom exhausts for all sorts of cars and bikes. But if it really important, I'll see about getting knobby hanger rods, OEM style.
BTW - Thanks for the nice writeup Rimmsy!
I'm taking #40 to SSX with me to auction. There is also an #8 up for auction as well if you know where to look.
Cheers,
Hymee.
Ah, I didn't realise your own first mild steel system suffered the same fate! Mine didn't rust though, if it had been a rust issue then welding wouldn't have been an option. I take it you've had no reports of cracking with the stainless systems?
I was unaware that the mild steel option had been discontinued.
Hurry with the new pipe....I have five week until I need to chase you up!!

I never really expected, or set anyones expectations, that the MS system would last more than 2 or 3 years at best. I'd be surprised if any of the handful of them around where still in good nick.
Never had any problems with a stainless one. It is the premium quality product. That is why is was sad to see a picture of one with misleading comments pointing towards it. Public comments at that.
Cheers,
Hymee.

Rightio....message received. Twice.
I bought a mild steel system because I was aware that rotary engines run a very hot exhaust. Couple that with the fact that I don't do short trips in my car and I was pretty certain that a mild steel system would go the distance for me.
For info, my 23yo RX-7 still has it's full original exhaust system.
I'll be in touch to order a stainless system from you when you get back from SSX.
Cheers.
Hymee,
Understand from the above that you are looking at developing a new intermediate pipe section.
Any plans to move forward and do a mid pipe as well?
As you know, I'm a big fan of your catback and would love to see a more complete product, which includes the mid pipe.

damn you hymee!!!!!
yes i did just go measure the stock back pipe.. it is indeed 2.5 in.. i think i got confused with my borla..
i will have to pull that off to make sure.. i do think offering a back pipe would help sales, at least in the usa..
and a 3" back pipe to a 3" flange to the Y would be even better.
just my opinion, i could be wrong.. (again
)

I've got mild steel and its got zero rust and the black finish is still intact. Pipes are smashingly hot as I use stainless steel kitchen cleaner.
I've considered JDM exhausts, but the Hymee sound is superior. Might have to go for the version 2, heres hoping that it sounds the same.

I'm sure the MKII will sound the same. Hymee, I gather the new mufflers are the same as the old ones internally??
BTW - you know the comments about the hangers... think about what is going on on the inboard side, rather than the outside...
Cheers,
Hymee.

My query has been ignored...
Threres too many Trevs around here....the ebay link is a good one Michael.
Whatever you do Hymee make sure it's appropriately registered overseas. Parts of the Asian market love to hijake others ideas, but most people are aware of cheap imitiations and "you get what you pay for".
Having said that I'm confident your short and long term strategies are rock solid, and your business venture will take off in leaps and bounds....

Oops. Not intentional!
Yep. Looking into adding that intermediate pipe with the new systems in the not too distant future.
Regards forwards of that, I don't think I'll do an upgraded mid pipe unless I did extractors and a high flow cat, like what was on Wildcards car. Someone go find the pics and link them in please :D
Cheers,
Hymee.
Go to e-bay and bid for the Hymsters 0000008 Stainless Steel collectors version

High flow cat, etc as part of the mid pipe section is what I was talking about. Understand you'd probably want to do extractors as well if you went that far forward.
Never mind, adding the intermediate pipe should be an improvement on an already great product. Keep us posted as to when it's available, etc.
you know my gmail.
btw, am curious about the mufflers also.. my fight is drone at 3700 rpm. with my 3" cat and resonator...
