Clear coat pealing, warranty fix?

My 05 RX8 was bought used, certified with only 20k miles on it. I was waxing it and noticed that down in the rainrail on the roof on the passenger side the clear coat is starting to peel.

The service department at the Mazda dealer I purchased it at said the warranty on clearcoat and paint only applies to first owner.

Is this BS or should I try another dealer?

Im pretty sure its not wax. Cant really tell by the pic but when you look at it, it looks like a very thin, clear, plastic wrapper just peeling and curling out.

I did call Mazda USA, they said take it to a deal, have them look at it and it will be covered under warranty if they can determine it was a bad clear coat and not bad care or happening because of the environment.

How do they tell that, who knows???

it's very unlikely japans paint would peel so soon.i would check the cars history and see if it was repainted somewhere.a couple of years ago there was some bad clear coat going around (dealer's got a bargain!)but it would peel real bad on and around the hood and roof lines!took about a year or so to be noticed.take the time and have a real pro look at our roof line, door jams, mouldings and such to see if there were any past repairs that are turning into a nightmare now.paint that has a ridge type edge most likely been repainted.

Happening because of the environment? What, so if the sun comes out and makes it peel off you're not covered by warranty? Bullshit! Make them pay for it!

Yeah exactly...

I will be pissed if they try to say its something about miscare etc.

Then again it would be kinda hard to say miscare since the paint reflects the sky, everything around it.

Well I took it to the dealer this morning, showed them the spots on the clear coat that I saw where issues were at. No issues at all, they just took a glance and said they will get it taken care of.

Great service, no hassles, and the put me in a loaner as well.

What would you guys do???

Ok so my clear coat is peeling on my 2005 Velocity Red.

When I bought the car on 7/7/07, the paint looked good, door jams looked good, etc.

Well noticed the clear coat is peeling the dealer offered to respray.

They called me back and told me some of the right side of the car had been resprayed previously, nothing showed up in the Mazda database of warranty work.

The dealer was nice enough to show me how they could tell. There is a very small areay behind the rear door where is is rough, where on the other side it is smooth.

I checked the jams, engine bay, etc. before purchasing looked good, only noticed things after getting up close and personal when waxing it. The CarFax showed up clean as well.

What would you guys do in this situation?

Also, anyone know a way I could find the previous owner so I could ask about why it was resprayed etc???

Well the issue is that the dealer isnt warrantying the clear coat because apparently the car has been resprayed but not by Mazda.

Would you guys keep the car? Respray the car under an insurance claim? Get rid of the car? Try to track down the previous owner and ask the extent of the damage?

I got if from a useded dealer. I could call them but Im sure they are gonna make up all kinds of BS about how it isnt their problem.

Well I got a hold of the original owner, he said the car never had any mechanical issues, no major damage, etc.

He said it got resprayed because his wife was pulling out not paying attention and the right side got scraped against the fence. He told me where it got painted (Service King) and is going to tell them the paint is having issues.

He said the work has a lifetime warranty.

Crappy situation, but i feel relieved.
