I installed royal purple max gear in the trans and rear a little over a month ago. Since then I have notice gear grinds: Shifting up into fourth gear with the rpm's over 6000, shifting down into 2nd from 3rd, shifting into 1st over 10 mph. Happens more often if the trans is at operating temp.

Now logic says my trans doesn't like the RP as it wasn't grinding at all before the fluid swap. I ordered 2 quarts of redline shockproof "heavy" which will arrive next week. I'm going to first swap the trans fluid then hit the highway and city to see the results, and will test all the situations above that I mentioned. If grinding is still present i'm going to adjust the plunger rod a couple times and retest.

Finally if grinding still is present off to the dealer for a trans inspection.

it works great for me, but if your synchros and forks are significantly damaged no oil type will make a difference

I had this same issue many years ago with my old Eagle Talon.

The problem for me was that the synthetic trans oil was too "slippery" to allow smooth gear engagement.

The fix was a small bottle of Mopar Friction Modifier, an oil additive for transmissions available at any Chrysler dealer. It's cheap and it worked well.

agreed, i've been babying the gears avoiding grinds, but damage is damage.

Shockproof goes in tomorrow morning (as well as new pads and rotors), so I'll test the gears out again in these prior situations. If need be i'll mess with the plunger rod saturday morning.

I have the exact same issues and it just so happens I noticed it when I swapped to RP as well. I have since then flushed out RP and installed non-synthetic transmission fluid that I purchased from the dealer, unfortunatly this didn't alleviate the issue. I'm curious to see what redline does for you.

almost everyone one that i know, that swaped out for rp had to eventually get a new trans. grinding never stopped, when replaced with diff fluid.

rumor has it that rp and the s s do not go together very well.

50k miles with royal purple in the trans. of 72 k miles. still shifts fine....

and mine is one of the 04s that have had all the problems...

Redline shockproof heavy is in, the grinds are all gone. I tested everything that grinding in the past: highway shift from 3rd gear into 4th gear, downshift from 3rd to 2nd, and downshift from 2nd to 3rd. This stuff is HEAVY, and I think the RP maxgear is hey to light for our rpm range (and heat for that matter.)

One detail i noticed is it does take longer to get to the normal heat operation, so the trans is slightly harder of a shift at first, but disappears after only a min or two. I will have to see if this is only a "bandaid" for a more serious trans problem or that simply my trans does not like light oil.

But for now I recommend this for anyone with grinds that has RP in their trans at the moment.


Other notes: I did not flush the trans, just drained the RP, then pumped in the Redline shockproof heavy. Also i have the stock shifter and no other driveline mods, stock clutch, flywheel, etc.

Does tranny oil have a break in period? I ask because I wasn't sure the RP was working well at first, just going by feel. But I'm 2000 miles after the change now and it's never felt better. Tranny slides from gear to gear beautifully. I was about to change it but I'm glad I didn't. Maybe the improvement is from the warm weather now, but it's not like it was cold before. I'm in CA.

I had mine in for about 2 months, and it just declined as the time went further.

I have royal purple (not sure on miles, but at least 10,000), afe short throw shifter, and am turbocharged. royal purple max gear works great in both my transmission and diff. I plan to continue using them both as it runs (marginally) nicer than redline did for me.

I hope to have Motul Motylgear 75W-90 in this week. The best quote from the literature is: Specifically recommended for gearboxes that are hard to shift.

Yeah this isn't a "don't get RP" thread, alot of people love it, and in your circumstance with even more drivetrain stress it holds up to its name, hell it's still in my rear diff and I plan on keepin it there. Maybe some of us got a bad batch, or some other factor is changing our results. It just seemed to likely after hearing from people hear about RP grinds then getting them myself. I just wanna see if this new stuff is merely masking a greater problem.

was not trying to start anything here. but what i was stating was talked about.
and i do know of one person here locally that ran with rp and the ss.
once he got his knew trans, he did not put the ss back in as he thought it was part of the problem. and that is fact... and i'm not putting any of the products down, i also have the ss and love it...

I had the same issue with RP. For some reason, my transmission just did NOT like the stuff. It's quite common to have 90-95+ degree weather here in the summer and if I tried any high rpm shifts, it would grind every time.

I've seen Newcastle's car; he never had problems with Redline but the VERY day he switched to RP it started to grind.
Not putting down RP, it works great for some people but for others it doesn't.

well, it's well in the 90's here and mines running well today. in fact I was thinking how much smoother the car runs with royal purple in the engine than it did with castrol syntec.

i've only grinded my transmission a few times, and all my fault (didn't clutch in enough cause i moved one foot a bit faster than the other)

My Royal Purple is crunchy on the 1-2 shift when the transmission is cold and so I take that shift really slowly. Once it's warmed up it's great. Redline had the same problem.
