Are these fees normal?

Got this from a dealer and was just curious if it was normal or not re: fees on top of selling price:

"The fees would include $100 air conditioning tax, $20 tire tax and a documentation fee of $195, which come to a total of $315 on top of the selling price. If you are going to finance the vehicle there is also a lien registration fee of $33 which the bank charges."

There was also an additional $2,500 on the following accessories "rear spoiler, side skirts, rotary crests and more". What constitues the Rotary package?

The documentation fee is their way of removing the administration fees from their profit margin.

Thanks for the feedback

$315 is chump change to me, but I wasn't sure if that was nickel-and-diming stuff... which can speak volumes about a dealer.

Any comments about the accessory package?

The dealer's demo (owner driven) is going for $45k with that package.

Seriously, can't the administration fee be negotiated? Isn't that just a fee for processing the paperwork? If so, isn't that a full time job of the dealers' admin staff? They make it sound as if they hire a contractor for every car purchase.

Best way to find out is to ask the dealer. The prices for the accessories are on the Mazda Canada website. This will tell you if it is a good deal or not.

The documentation fees are total crap.. There is no fee to place the documents with transport. This is a dealer surcharge that varies from dealer to dealer. Tell them that if they want the sale, remove the doc fees.

Also don't buy rotary crests from any Mazda dealer. Order yours from MazdaTrix the price is about 55-60 bux USD. Shipping is cheap and they have some instock.

Also, does the $2,500.00 for accessories include the parts and labour to install them? Look into this carefully so you don't get ripped off there too.

Damn I HATE dealers that inflate the price of a vehicle just to make a fast buck.

Well I have to admit it was the only dealer that actually broke down the fees voluntarily. The others just quoted x$ + tax + fees.

Thanks for the tips on the accessory stuff.

Doc prep fees are another way for the dealer to make a little bit of money. They usually have them printed on their forms so it appears more "official". Edmunds.com has some good info on the this kind of stuff.

Dealers are not allowed to charge the doc prep fee for S-plan people.

"The dealership may not charge separately for document preparation or other administrative services incidental to the delivery of the vehicle. These expenses are considered to be part of the dealer's normal cost of doing business for which the dealership is compensated by the commission paid."
