Rotary Tunning

Hello,

I've been reading this forum long enough to decide going supercharged. I'm planning to install Blitz S/C kit, but as I'm going to buy it in Japan, and my RX-8 is Euro version, I suppose, I'll have to tune the e-manage to fit my ECU.

Hence the question - in Poland, where I live, tuners have no experience with rotary engines, however they are really good with Hondas and VAG cars. Do they need any special skills to tune the Renesis? Is tuning different than with piston engines? If it is, in what aspects?
Thanks for help,
Marcin

The number 1 thing is that rotaries do not like detonation at ALL. A common tuning strategy is to start rich, then sneak up on the lean best torque until you start to knock, then back off for a "safe" tune. This can kill a rotary very quickly, although some people seem to have knock resistant engines.

Thanks, I understand this. What worries me, however, is the ignition - leading and trailing spark plugs. Does tuning for a conservative boost also need changing ignition times separately for each sparkplug? Sorry if I sound amateur, but I'm trying to judge if polish tuners will manage.

As far as I can tell, and Mazda Maniac is def the best expert; for a nice safe tune, you do not have to get into leading and trailing plugs. You SHOULD, but if you move far away from the ragged edge you should be fine. I plan to run mine seperate as soon as I feel more comfortable with my understanding of the concept.

Thanks, Kane, thats very helpful. So, if there is no valve timing to adjust, and the sprark plugs can be ommited, the whole thing sums up to basic ignition and fuel timing, right?

That is a basic view of it. However to get better results you would have to look at timing (not valve timing). If you are using e-manage my other thread and MazdaManiacs various threads have a lot of info about EMU specifically.
