Around here the policeman's definition of driving too fast for conditions is losing control and hitting something.

Sorry it happened to you and your car but it looks to me like you're running summer rubber in winter! If that's true then what were you thinking?

Give a guy a break—I'm sure he wasn't running summer tires. He's got 70 posts here—and I assume, an owner's manual—so I don't see "summer rubber" as a factor in this accident. What are you suggesting—that he's stupid? There must be some other cause for the crash—icy patch of road, perhaps?

Were you being sarcastic? Your response seems aimed at making him feel worse.

But Look at the picture he posted. OEM rims and probably OEM tires.
Based on my experience with my RE040s and cold weather I change to winter tires as soon as the temerature is consistently below 10C (50 F) daytime highs.
Driving with summer tires on snow is possible but it's stupid!
Every accident has at its root a sequence of events. Maybe he hit a patch of ice. Maybe he was driving too fast for the snow and cold. Maybe he had summer tires. Bottom line is, this was preventable. It does not mean that I don't feel for the guy.

Yeah you can see what looks like 'POTENZA' on the tire...

Sorry for your luck...I know how bad the stock potenzas sucked in even a little rain around here...i'd hate to drive in snow with them.

Here's a video of an rx8 in snow with stock potenzas

What I said does seem insensitive - I'm sorry. And I know how bad I feel when something happens to my car. But if you're running summer tires in snow, surely you realize you have only yourself to blame. I could understand the temptation to take the 8 out—carefully—in snow "just this one time," but if I did that and slid into something I'd be blaming myself—and I wouldn't be surprised.

Some of us just don't have the luxury to leave the car at home or buy snow tires.... I didn't plan on having two RX-8s for the winter but now I do and so the wife's has the snow tires, mine has stock. After two winters with an RX-8 I just realize I have to be extra careful. And get a running start across ditches.

I've said this before and will say it again...Driving this car on stock summer tires in the snow is IRRESPONSIBLE and DANGEROUS. No matter who you think you are, or how long you've driver rear-wheel drive cars in the snow it is unsafe. You are endangering the lives of people around you. And I find it VERY difficult to believe that you can afford two $30,000 cars...but not $400 for tires.

I'm sure the OP was looking for a pity party but this isn't the place for it if you did something stupid like try to drive fast in the OEM Potenzas in snow/ice. Those things are SH*T. Nobody ever buys them again with their own money.

And the earlier comment that seemed to relate post count to intelligence/knowledge/common sense was humorous as well
