I was thinkin' about the same thing, I did that on my NA FC... but I want the muffler to be in the middle of the rear bumper, kinda like what Stillen did with the 350Z. Obviously I need to have somebody customize or make me a new rear bumper. I'm still thinking about it... but if I were to pursue it, It'd be full titianium and a new polyurethane bumper that'll match my Tsunami front bumper and sideskirts. maybe after I return from Iraq...

Unfortunately, it would be almost impossible to position the muffler with a similar angle as the single side exhausts on an FC or FD. If you look at the attached picture of the single side HKS Hi-Power exhaust, you will notice that there is very little room.

Good Luck!

the only way to do it is to make a custom bumper with the exhaust more towards the center

I would definately like to put in a single slant exhaust... I know there are a lot of people here who do not like that style, but for some strange reason, I do.

If you do get a single done, please post pics, I'm very interested to see someone do this.

good luck trying cause its not gonna happen, well not with the factory bumper. Some people have tried it but it ended up looking like ***. One guy even had to remove the exhaust shroud completely for it to fit. Here's a pci of the my single sided hks exhaust. thats about as slant as you will get safely..

I saw the thread on the guy you are talking about deedub. His did look odd without the shroud. Anyhow, I'm still interested in the way his sounded and how he did the piping and whatnot. Do you know anything about his setup?

I have with Ferrita Swedens help do a back exhaust 2.5" system with a single stainless silencer and 2 3.5" rear tips. I must say with all of the sound clips i heard of the last year nobody sounds like this one. It got a deep mellow tone more like a potent 4-cylinder engine. The system made a solid 7 hp on my RotoTest hub bench. On Wednesday i plan to dyno my prototype header which is coatad. In hope to have 5-7 hp more power. I plan int he near future sell these system to Usa if everything goes my way!

I just want to issue an official "Thank you" to Mazda for designing the rear of the car in such away that the above statement is true.

Single or angled exhaust on a RX-8? No thanks. I'll be more than happy to carry around a few extra pounds than drive around looking like an assclown.

As far as the argument that the single exhaust it less restrictive, sure I'll buy that, but does it really matter on our cars?

I wasn't referring to you, there are many single exhaust threads quite a few of us have been there, done that

assclowns come in all shape and sizes, if you sound like one it's not necessary to look like one

me

I'm in Reno

here's the Stock Class version I did, just had to leave the dual tip exits open because the stock class rules technically don't allow them to be modified

https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...3&postcount=47

and the race version I currently run in the STU Class with the screened exits dumps behind the differential

https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...&postcount=131

BTW, I believe the Stock CLass version I built in the first link above is available for purchase, PM me for more info

.

It's built for minimal racing weight; 9 - 10 lbs total. Inside the car it's loud. Outside the car it should pass a 93dB limit.

the exhaust pipe out the rotary symbol in the rear bumper was first done years ago in Japan. It's a novel idea, but doesn't pan out well in reality. You're better off just dumping it with a small turndown just before reaching the bumper, as I did with the Stock Class setup above. The center section of the lower rear bumper is integral to the whole rear bumper assy. so cutting a hole in it, having it melt around the pipe etc. requires replacing the entire thing to fix.

your not going to need to worry about the bumper melting. ive had mine for 4700 miles. the bottom of the bumper acutally touches the tip. there are no signs of melting.

also, keep in mind that i have taken my car on 6 canyon runs since then. 3 of them over 40 min long with just about every shift redlined so i would imagine it gets about as hot as it ever would.

as far as noise, mine is WAY past the 94DB limit even with the silencer in. i have a 36in glasspack resonator and 600+ CFM highflow matalic cat (supposedly can take up to 2000 degree f' but we'll see) on top of the muffler and silencer. i have 3 in piping from the headers on though so its louder then if you were to stick with 2.5.

I NEVER drive without the silencer. its just too loud. also, it seems to drone inside the car at around 3000rpm and 6000rpm with and without the resonator and cat (i put everything on in stages so i know what it sounds like).

That's cool... What size piping did you guys use? And also, did you hack up the factory system to utilize the flanges?

ghOst, I like it...That may be my next project. I would like to work in the rotary accent shape somehow. Can you show a picture from underneath?
