For all of you premixers out there

I often see people ask the question "how much premix do I use?". Fortunately for you, Mazda has provided a chart that shows how much lubrication is necessary for full loads at certain rpm's. Keep in mind that different loads and rpm's have different lubricating needs. This chart has been added to in red by someone who was using it as a guideline for premixing in a rotary that is for airplane use but the information is still very valid. We can see that after a certain amount of lubrication, more is not better. As with everything else, the saying "use only what you need" is valid. I have also given you a chart showing apex seal temperature variance across the length of it as well.

is this with or without mop?

Total oil. I personally would only premix with a disconnected OMP as that has always been the tradition.

I don't see that chart offering much relevance to the subject with regard to the Renesis engine in an RX-8

It's a rotary. It has apex seals.

Please help me with this. I am a new rotary owner and am still confused about the premix. I read that the motor will have some oil injected as a design feature. Do I still need or want to use the premix? Thanks

You do not need to premix as long as your stock oil metering pump is working. However this is assuming that Mazda has calibrated it properly for all driving situations. You'd think they did but in subsequent reflashes they have changed this so who really knows? As you can see in the above chart, having too much doesn't really change anything. This is definitely much safer than not having enough oil. Rotary engines have gone on to long hapy lives with no premix and at the same time with so decide for yourself. A am a fan of 2 stroke oil but I am not a fan of premixing just out of convenience. If you want to just in case, go ahead.

rotarygod, thanks for the explanation. I asked several questions about premixing vs the MOP in one of the premix threads and was ignored, probably because my questions made it obvious I was not a premix enthusiast. You have confirmed what I thought was the case which also is pretty much common sense.

One remaining question. I thought too much oil was a contributing factor to carbon buildup and, as such, would need to be avoided. Is this a misconception?
