Here is some news that might clear up the weight issue.... The RX8 micro fish shows two manufactures for the RX8 wheels.... On the back of the wheel on one of the spokes there is one of two stamps:

LM= U-Mold
H= Hitachi

So now we need someone to weigh each manufacture to find the light one.

 

Anyone tested this yet? Mine have tires on them but when I put new ones on I will weigh and post what manufacture mine are.

 

Very interesting... I will keep this thread alive until July when I change tyre (I will post my stock wheel weight in kg).

 

My wheels will be off this week... but I won't be able to weigh just the Wheel itself until after I burn of the stock tires.... shouldn't be too hard after this weekend with the Phase 3 and challenge Evo schools. :D

 

I just put my stock wheels/tires back on after the winter. (I bought the car in Jan. and had the dealer put the snow tires/wheels on before I even drove off the lot.) I have the Dunlop SP Sport 8090 tires, and the wheel/tire combo weighed 47.0 pounds. The tires only had 82 miles on them. I didn't see this thread, so I don't know what wheel manufacturer I have.

I know this information is not exactly what is wanted, but that's what I have. Does anyone know the weight of the stock Dunlop tires?

 

According to the info on Tirerack, they are 25lbs.

I was wondering about this too, as my 2nd RX-8 that I ran in a test-&-tune this weekend felt lighter (and I have the Dunlops) than my first one did (which had the Bridgestones, @27lbs).

 

Mine are the Hitachi wheels.... Have not had a loose wheel yet, but the wheel with a Dunlop is 49lbs.

 

What a great way to drop 8 lbs. of unsprung weight off your car. The Dunlops are rated at 25 lbs., the Bridgestones are 27 lbs. Not to mention the treadwear rating on the Dunlops are 280, while the Bridgestones are 140. hell, go to a set of Toyo T1S, and at 24 lbs they are 3 lbs. per side lighter than the stock bridestones (12 lbs. of upsrung weight...nice).

 

My SSR comp wheels with 245-35-18 Kumho V710's are 39lbs.... 40lbs of unsprung weight gone...

 

how does the car feel compared to stock?

 

You cant compare it to stock as my light wheels have dot race tires on them....

 

oh, I just scored a set of 17" Gram Lights but need tires. wheels weigh 15 pounds. I guess it would be a nice difference in acceleration. Any recommendations for street tires?

If you are looking to race street tire class and the wheels are wide enough go for the 275... If not the 255-40 would help the bottom end gearing out of the turns. For just a nice street tire the 255-45 or the 245-45 would be great.
fyi: they also make the 245-45 in a RUN FLAT.

 

I agree. I'm running the 255/40x17 and love them. Pretty good rain tire and quieter then the OEM 040s. But like the 040, they are a summer tire only and they are greasy (which can be fun!) when the temp is under 45 degrees F. But once warm they are much better tire then the 040.

 

Wheels are 17x7.5. How wide a tire can I go?

I'm guessing 245 will fit but not 100% sure.

 

245-255 will fit... A wider wheel would have been a better idea.

 

I bought them for an amazing deal used. 245 is fine for now, do you really think it's neccesary to get wider wheels if I only want to run a 245 tire?

 

^hmm depends on the tire i guess ( who makes it)...245 fits perfect on teh 8" wide stockers....i dunno how well it woudl on a 7.5". probable will fit really well. if that's as large a tire as you want to go then you got a good rim. since 7.5"wide will weight less than aa 8" and up wide rim :D but that is just my .02

 

i have 2 hitachi rims (without tires) laying around. i guess i should weight them and let you guys know.

Sorry to resurrect this thread. I need to buy another set of OEM rims and just wanted to double check:

Although Hitachi and U-Mold both made our OEM rims, are they both 22 lbs? Was the 18/19 lb measurement an error?

I have never heard of a cast aluminum 18" rim only weighing 18 lbs...

You are in luck just last night I weighed the Hitachi brand 18X8 stock wheel with no center caps, TPS or wheel weights. On a digital scale I got 22.5lbs. I feel this number is pretty much right on as I also weighed on the same scale the OZ Ultraleggera, with cap and stem at 18.5lbs, the TireRack list the OZ at 18.4lbs.

Could be the U-Mold is lighter.
