Ill post an update of today tomorrow, more appropriate responses, etc. 15 straight hours of driving, over half of it on constant on-off throttle switch backs, and im completely exhausted.

We are taking it easy today, leaving late and probably stopping often, so passing through Portland tomorrow, 9/22

Well, it's a good thing I know the back roads into the state to dodge the tax men.

I did 62,000 miles all in RI. Honest. I just drove from Westerly to Woonsocket and back...1,050 times.

^ = accurate statement. Good food though. Something about watching the chef walk down to the ocean and pick out your fish.... well, not really, but it was THAT fresh.

I have no complaints at all, you put together a fantastic show, and it was easily worth every penny, every mile, and every minute.

My wife probably won't tolerate me driving out again next year (and I won't be quite so far, Tennessee probably), so I will probably be flying, but I WILL be back

And that was just a taste of what was to come. A Dodge Charger was tailgating me through the town just before then, but I wasn't going to go faster, saw 9 cops in 2 miles through there

But as soon as we cleared the town, I opened it up. Only saw him twice after that, both time when I had to sit behind someone else poking along for too long without using the turnouts. After the last one, never saw him again. Lost sight of him after about ~1/4th of a mile. He was trying, but hardly a match

My sister made this Facebook post during that time:

Had a Dodge Avenger pull over and let us pass, and later while I was getting gas stop and walk over "That looks like a perfect car for these roads! We will try to stay out of your way!"

 

The road settled down slightly for a while, more swooping 3rd gear curves for several miles, fantastic scenery, so much of it just couldn't get good pictures of, or it was the panoramic that was so awesome, and no way to capture it.

And again where it turned away from the coast here: http://goo.gl/maps/qIXM which, from every video clip I have seen from Deals Gap / Tail of the Dragon, is basically the same. ~27 miles of non-stop 2nd gear curves from 15mph to ~50 (for really short blasts)

Saw a car off the side of the road in the ditch, turned around to make sure he was ok, turns out he was just a photographer that pulled a bit too far off the road. No damage, tow truck on the way. Passed a cop heading the other way a short time later, and even though I passed him at ~41 in what is probably a 35mph zone, he nailed the brakes, at least briefly. I slowed up for a moment, not worth running from the cops, but then I realized it's only chargeable if I know he is actually pursuing me So I throttled back up, no chance on those roads. Never saw him again.

Before returning to the 101, I couldn't resist



101 was alot of high speed long curves, holding 90+ through most of it easily. Mileage did drop a bit though

We stayed on 1 / PCH through Big Sur on Sunday, and it was great scenery, but honestly can't hold a candle to Monday

 

So that's mostly it for now. The videos are going to have to wait.

Back on the road in 30 minutes or so if we can. Plenty rested, and easier drive today.

She has not only been a cooperative passenger, but an enthusiastic one. Never asking me to hold back or slow down, and even sometimes suggesting I cross the double yellow to pass people that hold us up. Not that I did that

 

Sounds like your relationship between the two of you is better than what is was prior to the trip from last I recall you talking about it. Glad to hear it.

 

Yup. We understand one another quite well I think.

While we were staying awake the last hour to get here last night, she was asking alot of questions about the rotary, the history, how it works, what it is about engine that makes it so fantastic, etc...

 

So we made the decision to cut the PCH trip short. Time and exhaustion are against us at this point, and I am mostly sated anyway. We still haven't re-hit the road. Heading East now still gets us through northern CA mountains and forests, through Reno, and through the middle of CO, which I want to see, but puts me home with a day of rest still, and I know I am going to need it.

Most of the northwest has stuff that I really want to see, but I couldn't possibly get to anyway, so it will be something I will be coming back to get to

Mostly a victim of an overly aggressive schedule, but still, no complaints.

Hey RIWWP , I did a trip around the Western States about 20yrs ago and recognise a lot of your pics. only I was in a camper van - Brings back memories . Awesome .

Even took a swim in Crater Lake . F'n cold if I remember
