Very good! Any particular reason for going with the MT90 over the highly praised Ford synthetic p/n XT-M5-QS? I'm about to order the Ford fluid myself.

Fluid change DYI and more info about the Ford fluid: https://www.rx8club.com/series-ii-di...change-217642/

Got a leak on mine. Appears to be coming from the top rear so either the neutral switch which doesn't have a seal washer or the shifter tower. Will have to drop the PPF and let the trans come down before I can tell what's going on.

going to back up to my previous opinion about dealerships and their mechanics

pretty much eliminated the shifter tower. I get everything dropped down to where I can access the neutral switch. Put the wrench and socket on it and just as I'm barely starting to apply pressure to unscrew it ... POP ... the switch head falls off completely sheared leaving the threaded end and guts inside the tail housing boss. It wasn't a good feeling to think I'm going to have to pull the whole trans out again now to swap out the tail housing .... f--k.

So I'm laying on my back feeling the fires of Hades dancing all around me when I figure if I can get the guts to pull out there might be a chance of getting a removal tap in it. So I'm messing around with it and realize that the broken off threaded piece had zero sealer on it and with my finger it just screwed out easily ... whew. It must have already been cracked/mostly sheared by whoever installed it and this is where the oil was coming from. Going from hell to heaven in 10 seconds flat was quite a ride ...

However, while installing the new switch my hand went on the bolt head next to it, which secures the internal shifter rod support bushing. It was loose and backing out! So there was probably some oil coming from it to, plus if the shifter rod support bushing had fallen out of plce there likely would be issues down the road. Tightened that back up to spec and finished around 4 AM. The leaks should be fixed now.

While the transmission shifts well 1st - 6th, it has the worst reverse gear engagement of any I've ever had. It takes 5 or 6 tries of it popping out of gear and grinding before it will finally engage fully and let the car reverse. Putting the trans in neutral releasing the clutch and then trying to re-engage reverse doesn't seem to help/matter. A real PITA.

Dealerships suck and their mechanics are generally craptacular.

Glad to read that you've sorted this **** out. They probably banged the switch one too many times while moving the trans about.

Mine is a hit and miss with reverse as well, but it had been like this since I had purchased the car. For the last 10 years I've been wishing for a smooth shifting transmission from both of the Mazdas I've been driving. It seems like that will never be. Maybe that's too much to ask for?

The switch is located in a recessed area. So thats not likely. I'll stick with the "was worked on by a dumb@ss" theory.

Is there a reason why discussion about 'technical issues and ''a'' dealer' concerning a Series 1 RX-8 MT is posted in a Series II thread about a S2 Manual Transmission repair @ a Mazda Dealer under Mazda Warranty by OP?

The OP's Manual Transmission is a P66M Trans, the above broken Neutral Switch pics and the Parts sketch layout schematic and parts description is from a Series 1 Y16M Transmission.

There are no similarities between these two 6 speed MT used in RX-8's, with no interchangeability of individual OE Transmission parts, gears, bearings, rings, shafts, plus a different renewal and technical instruction/procedure between most parts, including tech repair times.

One Transmission is around 20 years old in design the other 8 years.

From memory the Neutral and Reverse Switches between these two different 6MT's also has no interchangeability as thread pitch and wiring plug and length are different.

thanks, I was wonder what if any differences those have

otherwise we are just members conversing and sharing our thoughts and RX8 experiences with each other, not at each other. I suppose the irony of then comparing S1 vs S2 parts was lost in translation somehow ...

SERIES II Manual Transmission

Here are parts sketches showing the designs between the two 6 Speed MT's in SII and S1 RX-8 Transmissions, no parts are shared (except for a washer or small bolt ...maybe).

Nothing is shared.

Nice! I can now see exactly what the dealer replaced using the part numbers.

Thanks!

I've switched to the Ford synthetic earlier today, at last. It's even smoother now with less shift effort required.

the transmissions and their parts are completely different, yet when it comes to how effectively either transmission may or may not be rebuilt at the dealership the parts themselves have little bearing on the situation. They are both very complicated transmissions to be rebuild regardless of the parts.. They did have enough wisdom to make the S2 a top loader cover design on the main casing. That certainly helps.

Just a heads up for people with notchy shifting transmissions - take note of the clutch engagement point. The pedal should be adjusted to grab at about the half way point of the travel range with not too much free play at the top. I had the engagement of mine set too close to the floor which didn't allow the pressure plate to completely disengage from the flywheel during shifting causing notchy shifting!
