As I've posted elsewhere my 2009 has under 10K miles. It's spent most of its life indoors and out of the weather. How high should coolant replacement be on the agenda? I know FL22 is supposed to be a long life (100K mile) coolant but what about age in years if it's not been used?

I know old conventional green coolant can go acidic over time but not sure about the new long life stuff.

Mazda says their coolant is good for 5 years, but $40 in coolant isn't worth the risk of a $4,000 engine is it? DEFINITELY replace the coolant by 60,000 miles if it hasn't. Regular coolant flushes will help prevent other cooling system components from failing, however, they will still fail in time.

Not an emergency, it's already 10 years old so what another month or two? I suspect it's fine. Easy and cheap enough to change for peace of mind though.

Thanks. I'll enjoy for a bit before I worry with it.

I knew I needed to do oil right away because even though it was a fresh change it was synth 5W-20 done at Express Oil.I had decided after much research to run conventional 10W-30 or 10W-40 (only found the former on the shelf) and Express had put a Series 1 filter on it.

Next up is tires because the originals are rock hard from age.

At 10K I'll plan on oil again, coolant and probably plugs.

Spark plugs don't degrade from age, so I wouldn't focus on them. I would do brake fluid and trans and diff oils if you want everything top shape.

See, that's one thing I never agreed with. Unless you are driving an old Cavalier with the IAT coolant, you can go way more than 2 years. 5 years is actually about right.

OEM maintenance schedule says that coolant should be replaced in 10 years from purchase, then every 5 years after that. I would just stick with the Owner's Manual on that one.

Anyway, Loki's right about the fluids. I would just also check the spark plug wires and make sure there aren't any cracks due to age.
