It doesn't appear that Mazda uses these coated rotors in S2 rebuilds at the plant in VA.

Was watching a video on the prototype Mazda2 range extender and couldn't help but notice this coated Series 2 rotor next to it (being used for comparison I assume - video is in Japanese). So I screenshotted the S2 rotor and figured posting it here might be of some use to someone seeing as there isn't a clear pic in this thread.

Yes as I have said before this coating DEFINITELY exists on S2 Rotors, I have a brand new Japan made and assembled S2 short block (October, 2010) and when I turn the engine and shine a strong/bright/white LED flash light through a spark plug hole I can clearly see the black coating on rotor surfaces......so...

Well MSRP appears to be the same for S1/S2 rotors, or within several dollars at least depending on the specific rev level, seems like they'd just sell the latest version for all

Not sure if they did that only for production engines due to the extended warranty?

Paul said they are all the same part # and don't have the coating, I have not confirmed that though.

Couple of screen shots I took off of one of Knightsports' REW and renesis short rebuild videos which show the coating on the rotors much more clearly (screen shot quality is that of a potato though:/ )

He also has one without the coating for $50 more. You might want to ask him why ...
