ON Rattle @ high RPM

Hey,

Do any of you experience a rattle when at high rpm (7-9k rpm)?

sounds like its coming from the center console

"Marbles In A Can." As I understand it, it's caused by cavitation in the coolant pump at high RPM, and the sound resonates through the entire coolant system. Restrictors are available to reduce coolant flow to the cabin heater, to prevent the sound you're hearing.

I just tolerate it on my car. I don't hit 9000rpm often enough for it to be an issue.

"It's normal because the engine revs so high." They can walk home if they want.

FWIW, I got the restrictor installed at a dealer and sorta regret it. It improved the cavitation at 8500-9000 RPM, but now I have a little cavitation at 6000-7000 RPM. Its not as bad as the higher RPM cavitation I used to have, but on the other hand I spend a lot more time at 6000-7000 rpm then at 9000. Either one is tolerable, but if I had to do it again I never would have gotten the restrictor installed.

Thanks for most of your replies. Good info.

It really sounds as though the engine is going to blow up tho. Im not worried because by design its mean to do so but my wife is already a nervous nancy when I rip it and this rattle doesn't do anything to help it. Oh well, nothing I can do.

That seems unlikely, Sugarfree. Hot coolant flows through the heater core at all times, even when the heater is off. The temperature adjustment **** just controls a movable vane that directs a user-specified amount of air through the heater core, to control the final temperature of the air coming out of the vents. The coolant flow through the heater core is not changed by any controls available to the driver.

I'm telling you man I've redlined it consistently in the middle of the night, no radio on from summer to now and I never heard it till I started using the heater. Idk if the setup is like Honda or not with a valve that blocks coolant but I know my car only does it at certain times :-P
