P0455 (on a series II)
The Series I technical/troubleshooting forums are chock-full of P0455 being a bad gas-cap (or purge solenoid).
This just showed up on our R3 (well last week, got the code reader today in the mail, but haven't been driving it until I could read the DTC).
Given that the car is a 2009 with <20K miles on it, I'm not going to clear it, but see if it self-clears after a reseat of the cap and some driving cycles. If not, off to the dealer we go, and let them deal with it.
Fun...

I ended up just making sure the cap was seated well, clearing the code, and it hasn't been back since. (this posting will probably make it re-appear, but oh well).

You should be OK now Woody77...
Gee... I thought most knew you had to turn the fuel cap until you hear a few clicks, been that way for over 20 years...well on Mazda's and others.
But yes, since OBD II (and before in some cases) the Fuel Evaporative Emission Control set up is very sensitive for Air/Gas Vapour leaks and you will get a CEL if cap is not secured correctly or you have a line leak.

I always turn it a couple clicks. The code was thrown a couple starts later, though. So it might have been missed (by me or my wife). Certainly this would be the most sensitive car we've had to this (the 350Z and the WRX really don't seem to care).

I certainly won't be buying a cap. Not at 20K miles, and the cap being part of the emissions control system (and therefore should be under the 100K mile warranty). Unless the dealer treats it like a wear item for some reason.
But, if it happens again, I'll just make sure the cap is tight, and have the dealer deal with it.

When I had my last oil change done at the stealership, they replaced mine. The service guy told the tech not to forget about the recall. I of course asked what that was exactly and he said the gas cap had a recall on it. No one else on the board, as far as I know, has had this replaced. I never threw a code, pending or illuminated, but they replaced it anyway. This was back in... June?

There is NO RECALL on the Fuel Cap for Series II RX-8's...none.
In fact there are NO Recalls at all for the Series II RX-8...for any country/region.

Easy now, I am just going off what the service dude told me.
Like I said in a previous post, no one else on this board has been told this. I have no idea why they did this but it was done.
I'm just trying to, sniff sniff, share..... :P

I know mate...and you have said this before in other posts...kindly tell your Service Guy he is talking crap...
There WAS an issue with S1 fuel caps.....long ago...not S2....no recalls.
Being Done, does not mean it is a recall or issue...
Many Dealers perform jobs on Mazda's (cars) which are not supposed to have anything renewed .....
They usually find out down the road (about a month) when their Warranty Claim is either queried or rejected..

Ash, you and I both know that you know your stuff. I'm just being a little sarcastic, tis all.
My experience with local service people at Mazda has been less than satisfactory. Other than ASH of course mind you. They know jack and even less about the 8.
To the OP, you could try and demand they replace it but be civil about it. Even if it is a $15 part, it is the principle of the situation. Good luck man.

Living is best Modified.
Hell, I rolled into the dealership and the guy that marks down scheduling thought I had added my wheels. I guess he doesn't see the S2 much, or R3s
