Need Some Opinions from the Community about a Smoke Issue
Hey Guys, names Anthony. I drive a 2010 RX8 R3, with about 24k miles on it. It has a AEM intake and a Complete Agency Power Exhaust and I run 20w50 royal purple. Now I was driving yesterday and it was very hot, at least for Ohio about 93-95F with 30-50% Humidity. Now i started my car up, warmed up and everything. I drove around town doing some errands and stuff then I had to go pickup my check about 20min away. So i got on the freeway and about 10min in driving I noticed sizeable blue smoke but only around 60mph not higher. There was no loss of power, weird sounds, etc. Start and stops fine no struggling. So i plugged in my actron scanner and obviously with the cat off cus of the midpipe i got a p0420 error which is the threshold bank 1 error code for alot of nitrogen meaning the cat isn't doing its job because there isn't on lol.
Now this might sound silly but i honestly think because the car has never been exposed to those kinds of temperature its just the oil that already is combusted with the fuel getting superheated from the hot straightpipe and going out because it wasn't constant just for like 5-10sec.
Thank you!

Nope, big clouds of white smoke is steam/coolant, blue is oil, and black is carbon/fuel.
How much blue smoke was seen?
With no convertor, it could be normal, if you were able to see this repeat over and over again under the same circumstances.
BC.

Got to agree with Paimon...
Not wanting to go into an oil viscosity debate, but why are you using a 20W50 Engine oil in a 2010.?..IMO for a new car this is a little heavy...I would take it down a notch, 15W40 or even 10W30/40.

I’m running 20w50 dino with a CAT and have no visible exhaust emissions even at temps near 100F the last 2 days on hard accel and a full hot engine. Id lean toward its being normal for a CATless rotary. These emissions would probably be burned off in the CAT.

Overfilling may have been a possibility because I did put in 1quart without checking because I running late to work.
And today was also same temperature as yesterday and I was driving spiritilly and there was no visible smoke just soot when I floored it. But I'll keep monitoring
Also I've ran 5w30 in the car till like 10K and slowing increased the viscosity to 20w50. Cus I see much better idle and 9.5K redlines

You need someone to follow you in another car to determine what the color of the smoke really is. What you see in the rearview mirror is skewed by the tint of the mirror, the small field of view, and the fact that your eyes are self-corrected to the tint of the ambient light *in front* of your car, which is generally the opposite tint of the light *behind* your car. (direct sunlight vs. indirect sunlight, etc.)
Grey smoke can easily look blue in the rearview mirror, and a lot of fuel-ratio problems get written off as oil-burning instead. Just from my own driving experience, I probably see grey smoke 2-3x as often as blue smoke coming out the exhaust pipes of other cars, but I almost never see anyone on auto forums complaining about seeing grey smoke in the rearview mirror; they always say the smoke looks blue.
But yeah, if you dumped in a full quart and the car wasn't yelling at you about low oil beforehand, you definitely overfilled. The car will yell at you when the oil level gets more than a quart low.
