this may be a silly question - but I noticed the redline on the manuals was reduced to 8200 rpm on the series II - any reason for this? Does this have to do with the new gearing (are they preventing a certain load on the rotors or something)? And/or does this mean we should not be taking our series I's to 9000?

No, My redline starts at 8600 RPM ~ (Series II 6 Speed Manual)

There is a difference with the Automatics Tacho and Speedo's, and the car PCM restricts the RPM , I cant tell you how high it will let you go but not as far as the manual, by about 800 RPM ... I think.

thawk97 02-25-2009 10:08 AM

^^ so does that mean the front page on this which lists redline at 8200 is a mistake?

To save any confusion I have ammended the front page and added "Max Power (KW)".
The numbers are correct.

I happened to have a 2009 Renesis engine lying around (don't ask me why, long story...) so I took some pictures for you guys. Notable changes: new oil pan in two parts with annex (any explanations welcome), front cover is modified, 3 oil injectors (for reason the RG already explained). If any of the big contributors to this forum have requests, let me know.

Welcome to the forum CC, auspicious 1st post! :) Do you also have an '09 engine in a car you own or just lots of car parts? We love fun stories BTW!

Is taking it apart an option? I'd love to see the front cover and plate and rear cover inside and out as well as the oil pan, pressure regulators, etc etc!

Interesting..
See the front oil filter, like I posted previously Mazda have added this alloy flange protector around Half the oil filter body, this is the area you see when you go to change the oil filter under your 09 RX-8, almost impossible to do, unless you have the GENUINE Mazda wrench 49-G014-001, or use a screw driver and stab the filter body (messy).

You can see that you can not install a larger diameter oil filter, you have to stick with genuine.

Also that silver round tube adapter on top of front housing is the oil pick up for the EMOP's.

Oil Pan

The changes or extension to the oil pan under the exhaust manifold is to increase the oil holding capacity only.

That PINK disc is a Sump Magnet, newly introduced to the 09 RX-8 and last used in the FC RX-7.

That drawing's not to scale. Moving the engine back 60 mm is a little less than 2.4 inches, but the drawing makes it seem about 1/4 the diameter of the wheel, which was not a 10" wheel, BTW.

Very interesting information on ALL the Substantial changes in the 09 RX-8...

There are diagrams that shows the internals of the Oil Pump, plus all the new Codes and lots of information, including Oil Pressure Info and comparisons between S1 and S2 RX-8's...

The New Water Pumps has a Plastic Impeller (not metal) for "reduced water pump drag"

Radiator Cooling Fans now have a 3 Speed Operation (previously 2 speed) depending on Coolant Temperature. High, Middle and Low Speed Operation.

The rotation speed of the cooling fan motor is switched between three levels according to a combination of the cooling fan relays.

The cooling fan rotates at low speed when only cooling fan relay No.1 is on, at middle speed when cooling fans, in addition to No.1, No.2 and No.3 are on, and at high speed when cooling fans No.4 and No.5 turn on.

Cooling Fan OFF at 97 oC {207 oF} or below.
Cooling Fan Low between 97—101 oC {207—213 oF}
Cooling Fan Middle Speed 101—108 oC {214—226 oF}
Cooling Fan High Speed 108 oC {226 oF} or higher.

You also have variables when the Air Conditioner is ON and also depending on Refrigerant Pressure.

If Engine Compartment Temperature exceeds 110 oC {230 oF} or more with Ignition (Engine) OFF, Fans will switch on Middle Speed.

New Generator/Alternator Information...

With the elimination of the voltage regulator, generator control is carried out by the PCM. Excitation current in the field coil is increased or decreased by the duty signal from the PCM sent to the power transistor built into the generator.

ASH8 04-07-2009 10:15 PM

The OCV "Oil Control Valve" for the EMOP's has a "Cleaning MODE" controlled by the PCM, if any "foreign material" is detected in the oil, the Oil Control Valve Purges and cleans repeatedly until cleaning mode is completed.

I am not sure where this "foreign matter" goes...?

Variable Red Zone Control in Tachometer..

All 2009~ have a 3 position Red Zone LED inside the Tachometer...

From a Cold Engine ALL 3 LED Sets Are ON.

First One Goes out when Coolant Temp is 40 oC or 104 oF or MORE, But LESS than
70 oC or 158 oF.

Second Zone LED Set Goes Out when Coolant Temp is 70 oC or 158 oF or MORE.

Third Zone always remains ON.

RPM ENGINE RESTRICTIONS Controlled by Cars PCM....

ALL 3 LED ZONES ON RPM LIMIT IS 5,000 rpm.
2 LED ZONES ON RPM LIMIT IS 7,000 rpm (MT) 6,500 rpm (Auto)
1 LED Zone (Normal Engine Temp) RPM LIMIT IS 9,000 rpm (MT) 7,500 rpm (Auto)

...so the truth is that they duplicated the possible maximum oil pressure in the new Renesis. It is a significant change. Maybe it's time to worry about our low oil pressured first gen. Renesis.

neit_jnf 04-09-2009 02:21 PM

not liking a plastic water pump impeller..... wont it turn brittle and possibly crack with age due to heat ?

also the new front cover and oil filter locaction makes it impossible to add a dry sump kit?

and a MOP adapter to inject 2-cycle is also out of the question? A completely different one needs to be developed if its even possible!

Not impossible, just different

i'm guessing it's got a 10-year expectancy, thats about how long the plastic thermostat covers on the s5 FC's last before they become brittle enough to crack just by leaning on them.

coolant and plastic should be avoided, im surprised they went with that.

kevin.

Sorry my reply is late, I know you have been very interested in the Higher Oil Pressure on the Series II 09 RX-8's.

Frankly I would not be worried about the oil pressure in your RX-8, as it is clear Mazda's Revised Oil Pump and Increased Oil Pump pressure as it is also the main and only feeder pump to the 6 Oil Injection Nozzles.

The two EMOP's are not really pumps (Just called that) they are electromagnetic (solenoid) operated chambers with a main plunger that lets the oil through to the sub plungers (4 or 2) which are basically a one way spring loaded stop valve.

The PCM sends a current via the EMOP Driver which operates the solenoid(s), opens the main plunger, with the current off (solenoid off) the spring loaded main plunger turns off the oil flow.

With the EMOP's off oil is bypassed back into the sump.

There are no spinning Impellers or Rotors in the EMOP's to be called a true Pump.
As we know the 2 "Emops" sit on a bracket on top of the rotary engine.
