AKE Button Replacement

-Replacement ake
I want to start of by apologizing ahead of this time if this is a little rough, i took pictures as i went and sometimes i forgot to take them when i needed to. Anyways, i though i'd post this diy seeing as i couldnt find anything that would help me and my situation. Hopefully this will come in handy for anyone else that runs into this same type of problem.

A little background: I currently own an 09 r3 equipped with ake (advanced keyless entry), after a while it seems like the rubber button begins to wear and kinda just falls off (see pic bellow), in my case it was the drivers side button that fell off. I checked with two local dealers and was told i would need to replace the entire door handle PN# FE8758410C67 for $300+ in parts & labor. I decided to little research of my own before i dropped that much on just a rubber button and found out it is completely false. What a surprise right? All you really need is the actual "lock switch" which you can easily get for $25. PN#FE87594B1A (This is for the left side/driver side) or FE87584B1A for the right side. I figured it would an easy Sunday morning project,

This is what it looked like when the button fell off.

Where to begin?
Well, i'd recomment taking a look at this Thread.
https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-int...r-panel-21613/

Once the outer panel is removed there's a couple bolts and screws that need to be undone to remove the inner panel (they're all 10mm i believe). I highlighted the ones that are attached to the inner panel along with the window mechanism and the window motor

-Its hard to see but the the wire on the left hand side connects the outside lock/unlock request button to the actuator.

After the inner door panels, window motor and window regulator are removed the window needs to be taken out for better access to the locking mechanism.
**i forgot to take a picture when i did this but youll have want to the rubber grommet, this will pretty much be how you access the bolts on the inside.

-the green arrow highlights where you'll be trying to get into.

youll want to use a 10mm socket w. an extention so remove this cover

once that is removed, youll have a clear view of this beauty.

detach the outer door handle linkage

- There is two 10mm bolt that need to be removed. once the bolts are removed the locking mechanism has to be rotated about a quarter of a turn clock wise. When you do that it comes off and allows you to remove the door handle from the outside.

Almost There!

- on the flip side the button is help on by three tiny Phillips screws.

- and just like that swap them out and put it all back i reverse order.

Overall I'd say this is an easy project that can take anywhere from 2-3 hours. To be honest it was a fairly straight forward process but the one part you will have difficulties is accessing all the tight stops to get to the door handle.

FYI: If for one reason or another any of the clips that connect to the lock actuator arent completely connected then you'll have some issues. I did this and when i put everything back together the car honked but the driver side door didnt do anything when i pressed the ake or tried to lock it from the inside so i had to go back to step 1.

Enjoy!

Many thanks for this great information and pics...!

Frankly, AKE is nothing but a PITA at times...though I think latest Skyactiv generations of Mazda's are a little better 'electronically'.

Please be aware Mazda Part Numbers listed by OP are for Series II RX-8's (R3) where AKE is used.

Series I (2004-2008MY) uses a slightly different AKE system with different OEM Parts which can not be used in S2 or visa-versa.

Part number for series 1 AKE button driver side?

Sorry to revive an old thread. I've search d and searched and can only find the part number for the series 2 rx8. Does anyone know the part number of a series 1 (06rx8) AKE button on drivers side door? Thanks for your time.

Haha! It honked but didn't unlock! Sorry for laughing at your pain but that's funny. I have the same problem right now. Thanks for all the info. It's truly appreciated!

Sorry for the late response,...

For Series 1 with AKE the 'door handle buttons' are the same as used on Series 2's, the electronic modules and antenna receivers are where there are differences.

Anyway the Door Handle Button Switch part numbers are FE87-59-4B1A (This is for the left side) or FE87-58-4B1A right side.

Unknown part

Hi, after looking around this looked like the most pertinent thread. Thanks for the detailed diy, helped a bunch. When I was putting the handle back together I came across a piece that I don’t know what it is; once I got the back 10mm bolt off and rotated the locking mechanism, that’s when this piece came out. Have any idea what it is and where it goes back?

Unknown piece; one side is threaded and overall it’s an odd shape

Sorry for reviving an old thread. anyone know if the AKE button is on a fuse?

I ask because I think my driver side AKE switch gone bad. The fob works, the passenger side AKE works and the trunk exterior button works.

I don't want to get a new AKE switch and take apart the whole door to only find out its something else
