2009 Manual Transmission Problem

At first the problem was just a small grind when going into 6th gear and it seemed to just be the synchronizer. So I took it in the be fixed and they changed the fluid and then they replaced the 5th and 6th syncros.

So I go in today to pick it up and I go to shift to 2nd and it kicks back out and it will not stay in the gear. I then realize that 2nd, 4th, and 6th gear are all messed up. It will barely stay in 2nd, it stays in 4th for a min then kicks out, and hardly stays in 6th. It also makes a loud whining noise that I can hear inside the car, in all of the gears. The stick feels like total crap and I have no idea what they have done. I took the car back immediately to them and the service foreman drove it and noticed the same problem. They took it in and said they would let me know what they were going to do tomorrow.

The car has 27k miles and I am the 2nd owner. I bought it with 24k miles and it has been fine until now.

Any idea on what could be wrong with the transmission?

Well...bad rap for the Dealer to even let the car go out like this...very poor.

The Synchro's (5th and 6th) are really the only known change/mod to rectify the 5/6 grind issues...there could have been some 'gear' damage...could.

I suggest whoever was the tech (mechanic) who did the job either did not inspect other associated trans parts to see IF there was any other wear/damage and or has not re-assembled gearbox correctly, there is a procedure for correct 3-4th gear lever position.

Lets see what the Dealer does...

Hopefully it's an easy fix, but I can see them blaming me for the new problem since it was a hassle to get them to fix the original problem. The bad thing is that it could be so many different things and having them find the real problem could take a while and numerous trips to the dealership...

The problem was a twisted shifter boot, they fixed it and gave it back today and everything seems to be working fine.

HUH?..OK..Well one would think a tech could install a trans correctly, and I am having a hard time trying to find exactly how it could be a twisted boot...sounds like a service BS brush off to me.

Good to see it is now OK.

I thought the same thing too, but as long as it's fixed and works fine I don't care.

Can anyone give me some advice on dealing with the dealership about a manual transmission issue.
I'm a new owner of a 2010 R3 so I thought it's still under the PT warranty (5 year 60K)? and the gears are knotchy, grind and occasionally pop out of gear (mostly 2nd and 4rth, 3rd once as well) when high revving.
I took it into Avante Mazda (GTA) and had them change my tranny fluid but that didn't seem to help at all. Got Service guy to take it for a spin and he says it feels "okay" and that the manual transmission isn't covered under warranty so just for taking a look and opening it up is going to cost a couple thousand!? There's also a significant knock sound going into first (I think maybe this is normal, again service guy completely ignores me asking about it). Clutch is also slow to disengage.
I know there's something wrong because I've now driven several RX-8s and none of them felt rough like mine.

TL:DR R3'10 glitchy tranny, dealership being very unhelpful, how can I get them to take my concerns seriously? Also told me manual tranny is not covered under warranty?

any help greatly appreciated

Simplest answer is to try another mazda dealer.

The warranty clock starts ticking when the car is purchased - so if it was a 2010 model year car purchased in 2009, the 5 years may have expired. Check the original sales date of your car.

if you are still under the 5yr from the original purchase date and still under 60,000 miles then your transmission IS still covered under the powertrain warranty. Seek out another dealer, and better yet get hold of Mazda North America for assistance here with a balky dealer who seems to want to rip you off, if you are still covered. A fair number of Series 2 RX8 trannys have had issues, and dealerships have repaired and replaced many of them under warranty.

Agree with others, either take car to another Mazda Dealer and take THE Dealer Tech as your passenger and Show them ALL of your issues while you drive car.

Even a 2010 I would be demanding a new trans assembly.

Here is part number P6Y1-03-000 and phone any Mazda Parts department to see if stocks are available.

A brand new Mazda Trans P6Y1-03-000 is only about $1800 USD

Last resort contact MNAO by phone and in letter/email.

BTW: Clutch Plate is generally deemed as a wear and tear item part and not covered under warranty...particularly at high use/mileage.
