TX 10,000 miles and my coolant reserve is empty?

This past Saturday, I hop in the car and I get a unrecognized icon on my gauge cluster. It is for low coolant, not oil, fawking coolant... My first response was WTF! I just had my 10k checkup two weeks ago and those assfucks didn't check the coolant in a car that has historic coolant issues?!

Would you guys who have some experience, ASH8, tell me if this is normal. I would say it is not but that is the piston side of me talking.

Attached is a compression test I had done at 7k. Just thought I would include it since it could be relevant.
Other perceived relevant info, I live in Texas and it was a hot *** summer.

^That could be the most un-helpful post ever.... lol Spencer while it may be normal to need to top off your coolant every now and again to have your reservoir tank completely empty is not normal and probably not safe either, if you haven't done so yet I suggest you immediately add coolant and subsequently check the level fairly often... hope that helps a little

Hey, agree with above comment..

This car has not has "historic Coolant issues", only with expansion tank sensor.

I suggest you top off bottle and check after a few days..

No coolant leaks on floor??

Any hot start issues?

Any white exhaust smoke?

Done any mods??

These 8's will sometimes overflow when very hot...I have only ever topped off with about a cup full after first 12 months..

I am coming into summer so will tell then.

Compressions seem OK..

I would pre-mix??, do you pre-mix?

Your dealer should be able to pressure test cooling system for ANY leaks, from hoses etc.

What was your mileage again?

See what other comments say..

What did the dealer say about it?

The first thing I did was fill up the tank with diluted coolant.

Ash:
- No leak marks on driveway
- RB Exhaust only w/ no smoke noticed. - 10,237 miles on oDo
- Coolant tank looks clean, as no spilling of fluid. No dirt particles on tank is what I'm basing that on.
- Hot starts, I will say 1 of 10 hot starts don't crank up smoothly. As in the starter will studder and then it turns over. At all times when starting, I count to 5 after turning key to acc. and then start car as to make sure the system is fully charged. OCD, yes. :P

No I do not premix. The conclusion I thought I found was that sII's don't need to....

The S2' are better due to the third oil injector but even the RX-7 guys premixed with the 3 oil injectors.

You compression is mid range with only 10k on the odometer? Possibly not broken in yet. Who did the compression test?

Mazda Central Austin did the test. The reason I don't pre-mix , like you said 9k, is the added lube injector.

I'm waiting on the srv. manager to call me back so I can chew on him.

Honestly I don't know what to do. I've had so many issues with in the past four months. If I didn't absolutly love this car I would have dumped it for something else...

The Texas RXS's, austin based rotor club, has nothing but bad things to say about Roger B. Mazda. The pasts manager is suppose to be a great guy however but he is in parts. I'm going to try to go through him I guess.

Well, I would start premixing if I were you. If you have mediocre compression now it will likely worsen as the apex seals wear down. Did you buy an extended warranty?

I wasn't aware of coolant issues with the 8. However there are coolant resevoir issues. The issue is the sending unit for the resevoir craps out over time. Mine is on its way out now. For this reason I just installed the Lotek dash pod and an oil temp, oil pressure, and water temp. gauges to monitor my engine a little more closely. Your typical N/A setup.

You should pressure check it for leaks. Easy to do yourself but you'll need the tool, or bring it to the dealership and have them do it.

The OP lives in Texas and rotaries bleed heat like crazy. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he just had all the coolant evaporate out of the overflow bottle.

compression test done a warm engine?

you are aware of the coolant reservoir dump tube? (splatter would not necessarily be on the top of the reservoir)

+1 pressure check the coolant system

I checked the coolant level this morning and it is right where I left it last Saturday.
I've got a pic of my dash taken in Aug. showing an outside temp of 113* So it was a little hot this summer down here in Austin.

I would send a sample from your next oil change to be tested. Just to make sure things look okay. It was pretty freakin' hot this summer, especially in traffic

Just an FYI that sensor will be set off if the level is high or low. at least thats how it is in the series 1.

I would monitor the level and if its ca constant at the same level for the next week or 2 I'd leave it be unless the light surfaces again.

No way it goes off if the level is high Shady.

I've taken one apart and know how it works.

Spencer.........nothing to do with your issue, but just for the sake of argument, you do know where the fill ine is located right?
Some people say.........."I filled it", and they mean they filled the bottle all the way to the top!

Oh.................and check your coolant level everytime you check your oil level. That should be at least every two fill-ups of gas.

he is saying test the oil for EG coolant contamination.

most of the time you're fine.

just add some coolant first and see how it goes. its easier and probably the most cost effective way.

That is who I use but using a different one every now and then is a good idea.
