Update: parts have been ordered and should be here in the next few days

I will post photos of the progress, sorry for not doing a good job lately of keeping everyone in the loop.

To be quite honest I haven't figured that much out just yet. It really depends on the final cost of the parts and the amount of effort it takes for me to put everything together since I am working alone . I just dont want to throw out too many numbers right now in case I cannot commit. Also, I plan on taking some feedback from testers which will help me figure out a final cost.

I added a little 'status' bar on this page for those who want to monitor the final build status when I haven't posted an update: http://normalexception.net/index.php...canbus-scanner

was browsing your site (normalexception.net) and thought you should know there are some typos in your resume

ie:
Wal-Mart, North Reading, MA Full-time Job
Service Desk Associate Summer 2002 – Spring 2003
 Developed string people skills
 Developed cash register training in a fast paced environment
string is in there a few times

i dont own a SII but love seeing you develop such a strong tool for it

Don't forget to keep me in mind for S2 testing for RHD Down Under Paimon.

Thanks for the update Paimon. I'll be more than happy to beta for you. Just let me know what you need. I have a good technical background and some VB / C# experience.

Just in time for Christmas. Of course, you're going to need an S2 testing somewhere it is above 70F to verify the thermometer is working, right? I have just the car for you...

Might be an idea to sell them as a kit to those that can assemble. I have good soldering skills, just let me know if you need any help building them up. More than happy to help out.

Haha not to worry guys, I will try to get these done as soon as I can so that I can start shipping out some test units.

The 'kit' would be a cool idea, but the thing is that I am using all surface mount parts, and there are roughly 60 components per board so that would be insanely difficult for most people.

No....

Paimon, knows what he is doing, you can't outsource something like this mate...

YOU need to keep QC, solder, and assembly to the level you want..

All good intentions...

Maybe you could do both? It seems like there will be a lot of interest and it also seems like assembly will be tedious and time consuming, potentially leading to long delays in production. Maybe you could offer a kit (parts and schematic) for those who feel up to the soldering and assembly themselves?

Hardware design and software coding is the hard part: assembly would seem doable with just good soldering skills, patience, and ability to follow directions. Maybe I'm wrong?

Little bit of a setback guys. So looks like Rev.1 board is no good. Unfortunately the packages of the chips i selected are far too small for me to solder by hand. I am redesigning the board now and hope to have the redesign done by the end of the weekend.

Thanks for the update.... Such is the luck when you are prototyping.

I have a friend with a wave solder setup. Are you close to the Dallas / Fort Worth area?

Only if a massive earthquake hits and launches CT towards Texas . No worries, I already have the new board ready and about to send the design to the shop.

I'll keep our tornados and mild earthquakes, you keep the cold and crazy roads.. I just got back from Bradley / Windsorlocks, I'm generally up there several times a year.

Did anything ever happen with trying to mask a cel or is it just beyond the capabilities of this?

beyond the capabilities. To mask the CEL you would need to modify a couple bits within the ECU mapping. Unfortunately I do not have the technology to do that Sorry.

edit: the new revision board is at the design shop now, should have it within a week. Dont lose faith on me guys!

Np, it was just discussed earlier in the thread then dropped without saying why after you mentioned emailing that one company about something to add to your little board.

I figured going from just watching the info to actually trying to modify stuff thats already there would be a pretty big jump, oh well. Someday I will be able to mask this damn cel.

Midpipe, there are a few cels actually. Other than the obvious one for cat efficiency I think I roasted my o2 sensor on the midpipe because after a few thousand miles a cel for it came on.

Hope you received the new board. I was playing with my Fluke 97 ocsope today setting amp gains on a buddy's car and thought about this...

Board is still at the fab shop. I promise you guys I am not giving up on this Just trying to juggle the cost of ordering and re-ordering parts and boards and holiday shopping.

As far as I know tinkering with the ECU maps is on a totally different protocol, i.e. not CANBUS. I was actually doing some reading and have started toying with the concept of a circuit to fool the O2 sensor for those who cant use/afford a COBB. I am thinking a 555 timer circuit with a variable resistor and some logic might be able to produce something for us. I would love to hook up my scope to the o2 sensor for a few hundred miles just to see the voltages/current produced and such.

First things first though, the RxDuino

If anyone would like to take on the task of trying to get something going for the O2 sensor, let me know and I will lend my coding knowledge to the cause.

And before anyone gives me lip about the o2 sensor and "it cant be done" ... maybe with analog signals it cant, but throw some digital logic and a microcontroller and you might have something going...remember ... the ECU 'expects' something ... we can always fool it with some logic.
