I have some 17" MODA rims and studded Firestone Winterforce tires. My 8 handles like a pickup truck but for my 85 mile a day commute I've never felt more unstoppable. I've passed up Semis and 4x4s on the highway in the worst of the worst weather with out ever feeling unstable.

I love my 8 in the winter, you just need patience. Warm-up takes forever, sometimes it just doesn't get to temps so you just drive it differently. I've got Dunlop Graspic ds3 and they seem to be good enough to rock it like a rallyx'er.

You're the one missing the fun... I've driven my RX8 through 8 winters now and it's a blast with the right tires. Slaloming on a frozen lake is a helluva lot more fun than driving around in the Nevada desert, I can assure you.

Oh, and how are winter tires any uglier than summer tires??

Okay, i believe you. It sounds fun indeed.

Winter tires have ugly tread design, that's why.

Firestone winterforce tires in 215/55R17 without studs mounted on the 17" alloys from a "curb guided" Mazda6. They're slightly larger diameter than the factory tires giving a subtle bump in ride height. I just put this one on to take this pic it's still too early to need them just yet, but this winter i'll be ready! Monchie you're right about the gnarly tread design but it's all about extracting maximum performance for the conditions, they will be installed only for snow days and removed when it clears up (Yes I have an impact gun!)

We've gotten a couple little dashes of snow but nothing too bad, The one time it was enough to accumulate on the road an inch or two i took them out and felt absolutely stable the whole time. I had to go way beyond the bounds of good sense to upset the car. This is the first car I've owned with ABS and I'm still amazed by it, that combined with the tires make you feel pretty secure out there. Very impressive.

Nathan, you should let me know how those treat you this winter in snow/ice. I just about went with those only studded for better ice traction.

I read a review that pitted these firestone's against several types of "studless ice and snow" tires and it was on par with them unstudded, but ice traction was much better than the competition when they were studded while non ice traction was reduced, I won't be studding mine as in my town they are pretty good about salting the streets and getting them clear. I'll only be using them on snowy days and removing them when it clears up, but I'll keep you posted how they perform.

Blizzak WS70 215/55R17 on Motegi Racing MR 121 wheels in Titanium Gray. These were the only wheels I could find at a decent price that kept the look of the stock R3 wheels.

Sorry for the low res photo.

Just got a set of factory rims with blizzak's on them. Do others find you need to turn the traction control off when driving on dry pavement?. When cornering in town with tc on, the car seems to shudder and hop in the rear.

Wow, this is one of the funniest things I've seen in a really long time. Guess you'd have to be married a while for it to really sink in, but I think THAT move would be harder for me to put past my wife than the day I told her that, "hey sorry you aren't getting your furniture any time soon, because I just decided to buy an [RX-8]"
