I debate the winter tire vs. winter beater issue annually. Last winter I picked up a 1997 Cavalier for under $800, my teenager now has that as his daily driver. This fall, I once again went for a beater, a 1998 Dodge Avenger for $1100. Here in Minnesota, like other parts, you need to decide if the sand, salt, ice, pot holes and other drivers all slipping along together are worth the risk with your 8.
