Question Winter tires and wheels

I read many things about how well the car handles in snow with the right tires (I did not drive it in snow yet) but is getting bad here. However I can't spent a couble grand for the tires and wheels. Did anyone try winter tires on 16" steel wheels with winter tires? For $500.00 I can buy this from tirerack.com. But does this makes sence or should I spend 1000-1500 for a set of tires and wheels?

Thanks
Michael

Do a search, read the threads. So long as they provide clearance around the brake calipers and your tire profile isn't too tall, they should work.

For the 6MT that I have, I am waiting to save up the 1K for next winter and am parking it during snow and driving my wife to work and back in her SUV. Everyone says don't risk it in snow, those stock tires are killers. I'm not even going to try.

Here is some new helpful information that might interest you. Go read this thread about Ultra High Performance All-Season tires. This may be an answer to your problem. https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...threadid=19433

If you are gonna see a lot of snow I recommend Snow tires. There has been a lot of threads talking about various snow tires. One brand recommended is Toyo:

I have a set of these tires with wheels that fit the RX8 for sale: https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...threadid=19027

You can find them here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2456135059

There has been many discussions of the benefits/trade-offs of having a separate set of winter gear. I believe its the better alternative to having tires re-mounted 2x a year. Plus, it lets you use those 040's you paid for with the car during the summer. Also, smaller wheels have cheaper tires to replace, so when the winter tires wear out... it'll be cheaper than if they were 18"s.

Good luck deciding

Neil
