wheel axle question

did anyone try to chop their wheel axle short and put wider wheels? would this mess up the suspension geometry?

You would have to completely re-design the rear multi link suspension.......

Daunting job to say the least.........You could do it...but why?? You can put 10.5 wheels on the back with 285+ tires without modifying anything...Probably up to 315 with a bit of a fender roll.....

That's a given of course....offset is the trick to fitting any wheel tire combo.

I don't know what the heck he is up to? Maybe just didn't know how wide he could go? Dannobre has laid that out pretty well though.

Not sure that was a given based on the original question. Maybe.......but just not sure.

wow really quick responses. thanks guys.

i'd love to put 18x12 or 18x13 in the rear eventually. i just don't see this happening though just with fender rolling. or is it possible?

so you guys are telling me this won't be a simple chop? do i really need to redesign the entire suspension geometry for the worse? if that's the case, i don't think it's a wise idea.

It would be MUCH easier to do a widebody fender for the rear...and blend it into the lines of the car. You could go 2-3 inches if done right and barely notice the difference in the lines of the car.....I'd tackle that long before I tried to do the suspension

I wouldn't do it, but that's just my opinion. There was a thread around here where someone had a ridiculously wide body. You could search for that thread. I though that car looked like crap......but again..IMO.

Ditto

For show car purposes it looks okay but not something I could fathom doing to my ride...just my 2 cents.

yea widebody isn't my cupe of tea either.

haha what's wrong with my sn? i didn't walk across the border if that's what you're wondering.

so is general consensus no? it's not just about shortening axle that delivers the power? mustangs have these done all the time. maybe it's apples and oranges. i'd like to hear some particular reason why this won't work.

thanks.

Hmmm never heard of this before...Don't mustangs have solid rear axles anyway??? sure someone will dial in on that, but if your doing it for performance I would look @ getting some custom lightweight/stronger axles made.

not really,

in terms off cost redoing the susp. is going to be insane expensive compared to what you are doing now..

i think tastefull wide body.. you might look at some pics of the speedsource cars...

thanks swoope. does speedsource manufacture the bodykit? i really dig their widebody kit. but i know it's a completely different chassy. i just figured it comes from mazdaspeed as part of the racecar package. probably not a simple bolt-on right?

I want to pose a question, why do you want to go so wide??? The cars handling will suck, prolly a lot of rubbing front fender wells when turning.
Just asking for my own pleasure.

Altering the axle hub position does nothing to achieve what you want. The two limitations for the rear are the outer lip and the inner well. If you flatten the lip you can probably fit a 305 width tire in there with just the right wheel offset. Anything any wider will require flairing the outer fender or modding the inner well structure
