What wheel dimensions to avoid fender rolling/tire rubbing?

Let me first say that I'm a newbie when it comes to aftermarket auto parts. This is the first care that I liked enough to want to improve it.

I'm considering getting new 18" wheels on a stock 2004 rx8. I've read around that some members needed to do some fender rolling to avoid rubbing. What type of tire dimensions should I look for in order to avoid having to roll the fenders?

Width? (7.5, 8, 8.5"....)
Offset? (38, 40, 45mm ... ) <--- This I don't really understand much.

I hope this isn't too silly of a question.
steve

I think tire Rolling and Rubbing are two different things.

For starters - http://www.1010tires.com/tech.asp

You can get up to 9.5 without any rubbing if the offsets are correct. Check the Enkei RPF1 thread for the correct offset.

You can go a bit wider than that even (well in the rear). I have 18x10 +50 in the rear, no rubbing, therefore no rolling required.

I meant non-staggered, but you are correct (obviously, as you have them on your car).
