I thought I read somewhere that they are suppose to last something crazy like 10 years.

Just something I wanted to spread (hopefully true), the guys at discount tire said all cars will be required to have these things in 2007-2008.

The batteryless TPMS replaces the central receiver used in previous systems with a central transceiver that handles both transmission and reception of transmitted values, and replaces the transmitter used in battery-powered systems with a transponder, which returns data from the air pressure and temperature sensors using the energy of the transceiver signal. This structure eliminates the need for batteries, which also eliminates lifespan, temperature resistance, environmental, and weight problems.
