tpms all you ever need to know

Okay I know this is going to be slightly different unexpected but here goes.

I live in the UK and own a silver 230 rx8 hence my interest in the car ( well in reallity its the wifes but I get to play with it every so often) and as a wage slave I am a developement engineer for a company that specialises in setting up cars ECU's with TPMS in a production enviroment.

So I feel I can speak with a fairly experienced voice on most things tpms or if I don't know about it I will be able to in minutes be get a definative answer.

just to give you some back ground
there are roughly 5 main tpms manufacturers

siemens-
they do a 16 bit and 32 bit version and also make a vairation for daimlyer chrysler but its basically the same part
some of these parts can be activated by a LF frequency signal and will respond with radio package that has the tpms id , the temperature of thewheel cavity and the pressure. you can get other information like the tpms battery level and if the wheel is rotating etc.
depending upon the part it transmitts on either 315mHz FM if it north american or 433mHz FM if european.
can be fitted in landrover, rx8, jaguar, and some dcx cars

the others are schrader( gm ford), trw( kia subaru), pacific( toyota), Beru (bmw and other german makes)

all behave differantly enough to be a pain in the butt.

I have seen and worked with about 20+ different tpms types and for my sins have been sent to Utica MI ( our US office) for work. I was also at SEMA in IN earlier this year and hopefully will be in las vegas for the next SEMA show

I am not exactly sure what information I have that would help you folks eg remember I live in the uk so we don't have the same kit eg alloy wheels so I can't tell you what wheels will fit the oem tpms and my rx8 is not fitted with tpms.

It may be of interest to note that corvette car owners tend to like a set of track wheels and road wheels both fitted with tpms and use a tool to make the car "re learn" the wheel set and tpms set being used.

Anyway if you have a question about the tpms being used in the rx8 and I can answer it I will.

Sorry for the delay been out of the office for some time.

yes you can ge the tpms data from some ecu's using the obd.

The problem here is all cars manufactureres don't allways follow the standard
and in the end it depends upon the obd software you are using and does it know the correct commands to get the data you require.

We have problems in plants sometimes getting information about what we require to do and have to jump through hoops signing none disclosure argeements etc.

So the simple answer is I do not know how to do it on the rx8 its not a car I have worked on at that level

Yes, Dan Harrison's OBDScan RX8 enhanced program can pull individual TPMS pressure, temp, and battery level, so it can be done on the OBD port.
