Torque Sensor/Rack and Pinion

Hi, I had my power steering go out several times, and when I went to the dealership to have it checked out, they told me that my Torque Sensor was bad, and that I would have to get a whole new Rack and Pinion, because the Torque Sensor is impacted into it. Is this true? I have a '05 Shinka. I had the rack replaced, and within the next 2 days, the power steering was doing the exact same thing. I took it back, and they wanted another $250, just to check out the car and track down the problem. After a few months, I decided to take the advice of some guys from this website and check out the wiring under the air cleaner. It turns out, the wiring was corroded. I replaced it, and haven't had a single problem with it sense. Did I get taken from the dealership, or what? Any advice/insite from a mechanic would be great. Thanks!

yes, you were had by the dealership.
What's the purpose of this thread? Dealerships/mechanics take advantage of people all the time. What advice do you want?

Reading and educating yourself is all you can really do to avoid these situations again.

Yea, I understand. I actually used the advice, that I found on here to fix the problem. But, I didn't know of, or even think to look onto a RX8 forum, to check for an alternative, before I had them fix it.
So, the Torque Sensor CAN be replaced w/o replacing the entire rack and pinion?

Thanks for the reply. I, unfortunately wasn't in the right frame of mind when I purchased the car. It was an "impulse" buy, when I got back from Afghanistan.
Anyways, this Torque Sensor, it can be replaced by itself? The entire rack and pinion didn't have to be replaced?

I know what you mean. I purchased the rx8 the day after I arrived back in Canada after my first tour in Afghan.
But, I knew that I was getting into something that most dealers and mechanics would struggle with. So, I sat my **** down for a while and researched everything I could about the car and the rotary engine. I recommend you do the same!

For your question- I don't know if you would have only had to replace the sensor, or else the whole rack and pinion. I wasn't there to see the issues you had before. I believe, though, that you paid for something you didn't have to.
Nothing you can do to change that. Reading and educating yourself is all you can do to avoid being taken advantage of in the future.
