Just heard a comment on Autoline Detroit that this cold temp low pressure warning could be dangerous if someone inflates their tire too much because when it get warmer there is possiblity they could explode. He went on to say that the auto manufacturer's wanted to use a cheaper type monitor that would discount cold pressure but "safety groups" would not allow them to use that type. It was early but that is pretty much what he said.

"Inflates their tire too much" - why would someone do that vs just putting the manufacturer specified tire pressure into the tires. And what does incorrectly inflating their tires too much have to do with pressure sensors? Is it the fault of the sensors that someone would over inflate their tires?
Were they implying that it's better for people to not inflate their tires to manufacturer specified pressure when the temps drop - in case they forget to adjust them as it warms up?
With or without sensors, we're supposed to check our tires at least once a month (I check twice a month). If people did so, there would be no concern for exploding tires due to seasonal temperature changes because as it got warmer or colder we'd have close to the specified psi in our tires.
The RX-8 TPMS is supposed to warn us if our pressure is below 26psi or above 49psi. Hopefully tires won't explode before hitting 49psi.
If anyone else watched the show, please clue me in on the point they were trying to making regarding sensors and cold weather tire pressure adjustment.

i thought the TPMS warning came on not just when a tire exceeds its pressure limit (above or below), but also when there is a significant difference in pressures between the tires themselves. did i misread / misunderstand that? anybody know? i just got my 8 (been on order since last October), so i'm still learning...
