Tire gets stuck on the inside of the fender when turning left.

First of my mods are on my sig. This issue started happening even before i got my drop. What happens is when i turn the wheel all the way to the left i can feel/hear the left tire start to scrap on the inside of the fender. The side closest to the strakes. Now the weird thing is that when i turn the wheel all the was to right no scraps at all. When you look at the right right tire you can see it pushed up a little more than the left. I took it to the alignment shop and had them put the setting exactly the same as the right side and it still scraps. Everything is the same except the toe angle. So my question to you guys is should i just get smaller tire size in the front or is this an alignment problem or something else. I know my description is not that great but if you need more info let me know.

Shijin-Kun 02-22-2010 11:38 AM

Also should i take it to mazda to have them take a look at it or get my local alignment shop to look into it. I took it to firestone and they gave the usual bs, cars too low, tires are too wide. blah blah blah

1. You Fucking Son of a Bitch! You got the Five Ad: S5 wheels? Nice! Pics Please :) (I want the same wheels... if not... Enkei PF01's. How much did they run you? I tried getting a price quote from them a while back when the Bergenholtz bros first got the Five Ad's put on but I got no call back.

2. It can be your offset/tire combo. The rubbing is coming from your left wheel/tire rubbing on the splash guard. Nothing to be worried about.. but yeah its gonna keep rubbing unless somehow (ziptie) the splash guard a bit more up. To solve the problem that if it is your splash guard... take it off. And if there is no more rubbing.. then you know that its that. I'd hate to think that somehow it can be a shock/spring or axle making that noise. You might need a fender roll.

I don't see an offset spec for your rims in your sig. If too aggressive (lower positive offset number) that may be a contributing factor. Stock rims are +50 offset.

255x40 profile may be pushing it for a lowered vehicle, particularly if an aggressive offset. Most go with 275 - 255 x35 when lowered and aggressive.

Shijin-Kun 02-22-2010 11:58 AM

sorry the wheels are 30 offset. Actually the wheel shaved the plastic off and now is scraping on the actual metal. Also when i turn i can feel the car slow down thats how much the wheels are rubbing. If i should get new tire for the front what size should i get?

Huey52 02-22-2010 12:02 PM

Well, you're lowered with an aggressive offset, so you can either roll your fenders or get a x35 profile.

How much are you lowered? You may need a roll even with x35 if very lowered given that offset.

The "will it fit" thread may have been helpful prior to your purchase.

its not rubbing on the outside of the fender its rubbing on the inside of the fender.... a little hard to explain with out pics. Heres this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0432-2copy.jpg its rubbing on the inside part.

Huey52 02-22-2010 12:15 PM

Sorry, I just noticed you indicated inside and it happened before you were lowered as well.

It would seem then that your left front alignment is off, most likely camber although could also be too much rearward caster.

ZumnRx8 02-22-2010 12:16 PM

You didnt my question #1

Shijin-Kun 02-22-2010 12:20 PM

sorry, they ran me about 230 each. Also the alignment as far a camber is the same as the right wheel. I believe caster is the same as well.

Huey52 02-22-2010 12:31 PM

Something is not symmetrical, be it alignment or fender liner.

Mawnee 02-22-2010 03:01 PM

This is going to sound dumb, but I'll ask anyway as I saw a corvette forums member do it.

Do you have a different offset and/or different size tires on the front and back?

If so is it possible you mixed up the front and rear rims on that side when you had them off at some point?

Shijin-Kun 02-22-2010 03:03 PM

they are all 255/40/18 with all the wheels being 18x8.5 +30 offset but ill double check. At this point im just willing to check anything.

Huey52 02-22-2010 03:06 PM

It might not be a bad idea to fore-aft rotate them (presumably directional tires) and just see if you still have a problem.

Shijin-Kun 02-22-2010 03:07 PM

ill try that as well. lucky the invos are asymmetrical.

Ross_Dawg 02-22-2010 03:56 PM

Yeah man if switching the tires doesnt help, going down to a 35 profile is the way to go. I would wait until your current ones wear down though unless the rubbing really is bothersome.

Shijin-Kun 02-22-2010 03:58 PM

more like the wheel getting stuck when taking a left is bothersome... cant even autocross like that

Shijin-Kun 02-24-2010 08:56 AM

update on my issue: took it to several shops yesterday and had an alignment done again to fix the toe issue and the problem still happens. One shop mentioned that the car could have been in an accident that was not reported to the insurance company. So im going to have to get some smaller tired. Im not sure to go 245/40 or 245/35.

pdxhak 02-24-2010 12:18 PM

Are you rubbing on the fender or the wheel well liner?

Shijin-Kun 02-24-2010 12:20 PM

i posted a picture above to give a general idea of where it rubbing. It was rubbing on wheel well liner but it grinded all of that down and now its rubbing on the actual metal under it.

I have a thread on it. It could be offset, tire width or the combination of the two. I have 19x8.5 +40 with 255/35. I do not rub on the fenders.

Here is another pic from my thread showing the wheel turned like a 1/4 of the way where it rubs. As you know you can not sand it down or modify the liner because there is metal behind it. Not that it helps you now but my thread documents all this :)

Shijin-Kun 02-24-2010 12:41 PM

yup thats exactly my problem, i have 18x8.5 with 30 offset.

Shijin-Kun 02-24-2010 12:49 PM

also i have nitto invos which ive noticed look alot bigger than other tires. like the 40 sidewall likes like a 45. Mine was rubbing slightly like your until i got my drop then it started to get stuck. If its the tires i would hate to have to order some different ones in the front.
