Tire bulge question

Can a tire bulge w/o the rim being bent? or are they directly related? i.e., bent rim is what causes tire bulge. I hopped a parking lot cement thing at about 1mph leaving the lot. Visual inspection doesn't appear that my rim is bent and I just noticed the bulge the other day.

I'm assuming the tire guys when I take it in will be able to tell if my rim is bent ever so slightly? Inspecting it now with tire on doesn't look like its bent. I just don't want to buy 2 new tires then get another bulge down the road from a slightly bent rim.

Bulge is usually broken cords in the sidewall fabric of the tire.....kinda like an aneurysm

Before you go the the wheel shop, you could try jacking up the corner in question, then spin the wheel by hand and see if you can tell if the wheel's out of round. Make sure the parking brake is off and car is in neutral if it's a rear wheel.

bent rim wont cause an impact bubble. the plys in the sidewall of the tire burst when you hopped the curb.

good to know, im pretty sure rim isn't bent ( knock on wood) after several close looks...

the question now for me is do I get 2 more ps2s, or just get 4 less expensive tires.

i just rotated my ps2s, this will be the third summer i have em on. the rears (old fronts) have quite a bit of tread.

i think i'll probably get 2 new ps2s as i dont' want to waste the rears., but the price of 2 new ps2s is almost as much as 4 new tires like Nittos/Yokohama s drives, etc.

but i just love the michelins...oh well, have to think about it

Since you like them, get two new PS2s and save $$$. I'd keep the good one as a spare if you have room to store it, just in case you get a flat that cannot be repaired or have a similar mishap.

I'm sure you can rotate them (2 new + 2 old) in such a way that they end up wearing evenly.

On the fiance's Mazda 3...she had a tire bulge in two spots without hurting the rim at all. I took it to Discount Tire since they were an official Continental tire dealer, and they replaced the tire and I only paid for the "used" part of the tire. They measured the tire, and I only paid about $25 for a $120 tire.

It might be worth a shot.

hmm, interesting. I didn't realize that was an option.....well, I went ahead and got the 2 new Ps2s. I had just rotated my fronts to back a month ago, and I measured my tread on the rear tires and there's a good bit left. I'll rotate those to the front, put the new sticky ones on back, and still have a spare. Hopefully the tread will be relatively even after this summer or next since the rears wear faster...

about 700 shipped for 2 ps2s, could've gotten 4 lesser tires in the 800 or so range, but I just love the ps2s.
