Thanks Topgear now that wasn't too hard huh WhiteSnowflake8? He didn't even break a sweat and he was being nice and sharing info with us especially on a deal on KW's. C'mon this is a community of RX-8 enthusiast we should help each other out.

BTW most people that get deals from resources aren't supposed to tell people what prices or how they get them. That's in case you didn't know.

^Umm if I get a good deal on a product, and someone ask's me where I got it from, do you not think I will direct them to the supplier? Word of mouth is one of the best ways to sell things...

^No my question was directed at Snowflake. I'm saying that whenever I get a good deal on something, I tell people about it. Most of the venders on this site love when they see something like "I got a great deal on this exhaust from Fluid, BHR, Works Concepts"...etc...

Megan Racing Coil-Over Dampers

from the fluid site looks good - whats not to like?

under a grand
plenty of shock adjustability (though not bound-rebound independent)
plenty of height adjustability
camber control

...though spring rates are specified only as "agressive", which probably sounds sort of ominous to someone having to put up with new york roads.


Coming from Sentra Se-R Spec V(03) as my last car the availability of aftermarket parts for rx8 is mindbogling.
I'm counting 16 different coil-over kits for RX* just on fluid site alone!

^The megans are good for a street coilover. They can drop you really low and have 32 different levels of adjustment. But for a track coilover, not so much. That is why STANCE GR+ was recommended. It's a great track coilover for the price. But if DOMINION does not track then he will be very happy with the Megans if he chose to go that way.

Be sure to ask which they suggest for your application and price range. Having that many choices can easily confuse people which is why this thread even exists.

Megans looking like your top pick then - roads in Vegas from what I remember are pretty good, so 8kg/6kg springs should be very tolerable

From my experience with other cars, the main concern I would have is that some aftermarket coil over systems make a fair amount of noise. My friend got some expensive, quality looking JIC coilovers for his maxima and they were making audiable contract-expand shock sort of noise - not sure how common this is.

I understand that, i also point out good places to shop from. But i never tell them what i payed. You think vendors live off giving great deals to everyone? NO. I keep my mouth quiet so they can make money too. I might of been able to haggle someone down to a good price, so not gonna tell everyone i got it for that. This makes it a fair game for everyone. Remember sometime pay full price, they help you, why not help them?

Dom, if you plan to either track or auto x your car, spend the extra 400 or so for the Sustec Fives. for 1200 they are a great pair. Then you can upgrade later on to the TEAS and have adjust ability inside the car. It helps a LOT, adjusting on the go makes it more comfortable.

8kg/6kg from my experience is actually a little on the softer side of coilovers for the RX8 which means you'll probably find a good combo with that setup. The Ksports I use I believe are 10kg/6.5kg so the up front ride is pretty stiff.

All aftermarket suspension systems are going to product some noise whether it's sway bars or struts etc. Usually all the rubber bushings that reduce noise are replaced with metal or urethane for performance. It's all part of the game.

Working for a vendor, I can see the logic in Snow's statement. At the end of the day, a vendor has to make money and that means making a profit. On one hand, you would all be pretty surprised at how little margin there is on certain products so there's very little room to move with price. If you try to haggle a vendor on something like that they won't budge cause otherwise it's a waste of time for no return.

On the other hand, be sure to remember that if a price is too good to be true it probably is. There are exceptions to this, but normally if you see a seriously low price you can expect that to be made up in poor customer service or a lack of product support.

Vendors have enough to do providing support to their own customers that it's almost impossible to help customers who buy stuff from someone else. Remember that you're not always paying for the product but paying for the people, system, and support behind that product. That alone can be worth it's weight in gold.

Yup.
Noise is right. When I go over speed bumps I hear my sway bar move sometimes and the bolts are tight. I check them every 2 weeks.

Unless I'm misinformed stock spring rates are are 150 lbs/in front and 113 lbs/in rear.

8kg/6kg = 447lbs/335 lbs

Which means that your "softer side" is THREE TIMES stiffer then stock - which maybe fine for glass racetrack roads but will definitely be hardcore for the street.

I have a new set of Megans in the garage right now. Should go on in a week or so. I've thought long and hard about whether to spend the additional 1-1.2K on a good set over what I spent on the Megans and decided to give the less expensive Megans a try.

8 and 6kg rates make sense to me from the standpoint of moderately stiff springs allow for more absorption of apex curbing and variances in track surfaces that are not like Laguna Seca and most F1 circuits. For the tracks I will be on (Willow Springs and Buttonwillow) I wouldn't want spring rates that are any higher. I was able to discuss the issue of rates with an instructor who had just driven a Z that had the Megans with higher rates. While he easily put in the best time, he was clear about the fact that the rates were excessively high which led to a pretty unsettled chassis as it skipped across the track surface.

I'll report back on what I find. First track day is early March. If they suck I'll be the first to admit it.

^I'm also set to be at Buttonwillow in April. That will be an even better indication. I ran a 2:14 there the last time I was there so it'll be interesting to see how well the times improve. I don't have a time at Willow Springs to compare to yet but we'll see.
