Rear End Noise After Tire Rotation

I had my tires rotated for the first time about a month ago (5K+ miles) and afterward I have noticed increased road/tire noise from the rear end. I can't tell if it is the tires or the axle.

I brought it up with the dealer and there repsonse was that they noticed on other RX-8's and that it was normal; that the tire seemed to be crowned and that after I drove for a period of time, it would go away. I have double checked my air pressure and I dont know know what else to do.

Any thoughts?

If your tires were wearing unevenly before the rotation, the noise could be due to this. If so, it should go away as the unevenness goes away.

I've lost track of how many sets of high performance tires I've gone thru in 15 years but common things among them are it's damn hard to get them to wear evenly, they're inherently more noisy because of the larger treadblocks, and they need to be rotated more frequently than long wearing tires. I'm going down to 3,000 mile rotations with the '8 to see if I can do any better with this car. My 2 cents.

I picked up my RX8 on 8/4/2003 and I have about 20,000 miles on it. I recently started noticing a noise in the rear end. Took it into the dealer and they said they could not find anything and I should take it to a Bridgestone/Firestone dealer and have them look at the tires. The tire dealer said the wear looked uneven so they rotated them and they still make the sound. The tires have only been rotated twice, not including today. I think I need to get some new tires.

I still have the noise in the rear. It is real anoying. I think I might go to Bridgestone/Firestone and have them look at them, since the dealer is at a lost for words.

omicron is right. the camber wear is different front/rear and once the contact patch evens out it will go away and you'll get a little traction back.

just go drift, it will fix that real fast :D

Same Exact thing happened to me

The dealer offered to rotate my tires when I brought it in for the recalls. A couple days later I was driving without the stereo on, and could definately hear a bit of a warble coming from the back of the car that was tied to road speed, not engine speed.

I have a great dealer though. They rode with me. The guy could hear the noise. Agreed it wasn't normal. They checked the tires and found uneven tread wear. They called Mazda and were told they have seen some alignment problems witht the RX8. They told the dealer to do an alignment and give me two new tires.

i just got my car back yesterday after 5 days at the dealership. Their expects determined that the tired were severly cupped. They also found out is that the car's alignment (front & back) from the factory was way off specs. They aligned all 4 wheels and are ordering me a full set of tires.

I finally got to rotating my tires after 13,000 miles. Waited way too long, as the rears were wore down with little tread left, and the fronts still had a good amount of tread.

I noticed the tire noise from the rear tires right after making the swap. Guess when I go to the dealer next week for my free oil change I'll have them do some alignment checking.

Thanks for the info all.
