Ready to take my bashing.....I cut my springs!

Okay...before everyone jumps all over me....I did A LOT (hehe) of research and came to the conclusion that cutting my springs was only a minor redneck thing to do. If you don't agree, check with Gearz from the Speedchannel.... he shows you how to do it!

I started with some DNA (Ebay) lowering springs. I was hoping that the front would be lower than the rear, but it seemed to lower the car evenly and the rear appeared lower than the front. Didn't like this.

I cut one coil and it only dropped maybe 1/4-1/2 inch. Handling is the same as before, alignment straight, no bottoming out...and life is good.

Dear lord. This again? At least get spacers so it looks better.

I don't see anything wrong with them. They have been available for the RX7 for 30 yrs. I haven't seen them for the RX8 until now. The springs are a standard size, so you should be able to get different spring rates. I just wonder how well they will withstand corrosion.

Before you cut them... did you bother to pre-load the front suspension?

Usually things that cheap don't stand up very well. They might be fine, but for an ebay item for a fourth of the price of a normal pair, it just makes me hesitant.

I've been on these springs for awhile now and they're holding up just as good as Eibachs and Progress that I've had in the past on other cars. Let's see in 5 years from now though....

As for the preloading...that comes after the springs are installed and before the car is put back on the ground...and yes....I did....just as I did when I first lowered the car.

Is that all the bashing I'm going to get????

Go 25mm with your stockers. That gives the best look in my opinion. Look for yourself, but that is my opinion.

It seems like you're proud of your work. You should get a big sticker that says "I cut my coils" and stick it on the trunk for all to see.

Hopefully you know that spending more money doesn't always mean you get a better product and that you're paying for a name and bragging rights. (I work for a company that does the same thing) It's like going on vacation. What sounds better? Telling your friends that you went snowboarding in Colorado or Switzerland? I would argue that Colorado has the best snowboarding in the world, but just telling people I went to Switzerland sounds much cooler. (I didn't go to Switzerland by the way )

Yes, I'm cheap, when it makes sense. I went to Cars and Coffee car show and took my neighbor who is very picky about his ride. He complimented me on the ride and was never uncomfortable. I gave up some of that comfort when I first lowered the car. My main concern was safety because I drive my wife and daughter in this car. I only did this after much research, plus, had this modification changed anything about the handling of the car, I would not be taking my family in it or friends and would replace the springs.

The only people that talk about how stupid this is have never done it or cut 4-5 coils off stock springs.

I was prepared for this bashing, and yes...I'm proud that I can perform a modification that shops would charge hundreds of dollars to do. If I was really worried about the negativity, I would have never posted anything, but I love a great debate.

This is one of the many immature things that I can still do without much consequence.

Happy modding!

You're cheap and an idiot so yes, you reflect my previous statement fully.

Springs aren't just about height. Their stiffness depends on the number of coils, not just on the metal used. Same goes for their rebound properties, resonances etc.

Since you fail to know that you should just pick ANY book about suspension tuning and start from page one.

Unsubscribed.

Oh...and I almost forgot the other cheap mod that I did....check it out...this one cost a small fortune..

I know that I should've spent $200-$300 on a Mazdaspeed one, but I'm not a good enough driver to warrant it..

Here's just a few more.... I like the improved "Insert Image" function. Before, I had to click on the yellow bar at the top of my screen. Now, just a little window pops up. Sweet.

Great idea RageBrah...not sure if I would use the angle grinder though on the hood. Actually...since I don't have an angle grinder, I would use the same hack saw that I used on the springs. The blade is a little worn, but still has some teeth. The fake carbonfiber scoop would cover it up anyway, wouldn't it?
