I'm thinking of powder coating my wheels. I'd like to go with black. My 8 is black and I really love the black on black look. Anyone know what type of price range I should expect. I think I'm going to call a few body shops around town to see if they can do it and check on pricing.

 

I paid $275 to get 4 rims coated black in New Jersey. You want to look for a shop that just does coating by the way.

 

yea I was figuring it would run anywhere from $200-$300. Did you pull the tires off before taking them your wheels or did you just let them handle it?

how hard is it to remove the powder coat once its on there?

 

i think full black on black would be too much. gotta have like a polish lip or something

 

If it's done correctly, I think it's near impossible. Of course it totally depends on the quality.
My tires don't have a single chip or scratch, but the Racing Beat swaybars are supposedly "powdercoated", but I can scratch it off with my nail.
I think they should have called it sprinkle coated. (Just venting )

i went this way myself just cause it was cheaper than new wheels. i dont think the black looks too overdone with black on black. the pictures dont show how glossy they really are.

one time i hit a curb kinda hard and it got kinda messed up in one spot. so i took it back to the place and the said they had to strip the entire thing and then repowdercoat it. no big deal though.

i took off the wheels first before i took it to them because they didnt do that there.

I actually like the look of the stock wheels, so I had mine powdercoated as well.
Anthracite on a Winning Blue car.

I think they look nice, and they have held up very well for a couple of years now.

As above, make sure you go to a shop that specializes in powdercoating. Also, you will want them to media blast them down to bare metal before they put on the powder, so allow for the cost of that as well.

 

I gave them the rims without any tires on them.

 

the black on yellow looks good. the winter wheels i picked up had been powercoated and they have chipped rather easially. ive curbed them a time or two, so thats to blame for some of them, but there are other areas which show no scuffing and the paint underneath is perfect so it has appeared to just chip off. i dont know how much he paid or how good of a place he went to but i wasnt impressed.

 

I agree. Wonder if this would be possible to do with the stock wheels.
I mean, pretty much everything is possible with enough money - the question is if this would be something that makes sense cost-wise.
