Lightbulb Plasti-dipped my OEM wheels in Gold

I've been thinking of having my wheels restored, but having them painted gold.
But instead of dropping the money on that, I thought I'd plasti-dip them and see how they looked, just in case I hated it. Dipped the strakes, emblem and rotor accent too.

Just thought I'd share since I haven't seen many out there in this color combo, at least not on OEM wheels.

Not bad...for a temporary look.
I've always liked plastic dip for the fact it protects and if you don't like it you can take it right off and switch to a different color.
Plastic dip is good for those of us who don't like commitment right off the bat. :-)

Yeah, 5 coats of it. Very disappointed in the 'gloss'
it only looks glossy in direct sunlight.

Again, I'm not seeking opinions, this was more of a here's-the-results-of-my-experiment thread for others to make decisions for their own cars

Mostly the voice of reason.

There's always going to be an opinion just like ******** and I've realized that on this site.
Not everyone is going to like what you do and that's why your ride stands out. No one else will ever do what you do bc we are all different. The point is respecting what we do and what we love.

It looks neat, but it's kind of tacky. The only way I can really cope with good wheels is on a blue Subaru. Glossifier isn't quite like clear coat. I think part of it is due to the fact that the plasti dip underneath is not glossy in any way. Another reason could be the chemical composition of the Glossifier; it is rubber based I believe. If anyone can elaborate on that I'd love to hear it.

I'm going to do my fender strakes, wheels, and badges gloss black this weekend on my Velocity Red 8 now that I finally have time. I love seeing plasti dip experiments on good cars, not Hondas.

for what its worth man, I think the gold looks good and am a big fan of plasti dip. Ive done it to my last few cars. And in this situation you can see what your car will look like with gold wheels instead of spending 1k on gold wheels and then not liking it. Anyways, did you use the "vintage gold" or the

I was thinking of doing my wheels and emblems with that stuff but wasnt quite sure if your supposed to spray that OVER the black plasti dip. Anyone know?

the other issue with this, i would think, is getting the tires mounted. how did you do it without the rim clamp screwing up the coating??

Mine

I dipped mine this week. Combination of matte black (base coats), copper metalizer (dustings), and silver metalizer (dustings). I was going for an anthracite look with just a hint of bronze. I may hit them with a coat of clear (glossifier), but undecided. Kind of like the semi-matte look. Definitely not as matte as standard dip due to the flake in the metalizers. If you are judicious with your layering of certain colors and finishers, you can achieve just about any color you'd want. I've done this to multiple cars, all have held up great. My last car wore dipped wheels for almost 2 years, through 2 winters, and was still like new by the time I peeled it off to sell the car. And spending $20 beats spending >$1500 for new wheels/tires - at least for me.

There is an anthracite plasti available now that looks pretty decent.

Yea - it looks great if you are going for a straight anthracite look. But I wanted that hint of bronze, and wouldn't have been able to achieve it using anthracite + bronze metalizer. I needed to be able to have control over the individual levels of silver and copper over the black base. Had I gone anthracite plus a layer of copper, the copper would have been too prominent for my taste.

I went black (3 coats), copper metalizer (single very light but even dusting), silver metalizer (3-4 very light but even dustings), copper (single very light but even dusting), silver (single very light but even dusting).

I had to play with this on some aluminum sheet stock I had laying around.

These pics are the progression.
