Only 2 new tires needed

My stock tires are worn out on the back. (21000 miles) The front look like new. I cannot explain it but I need 2 new tires. I am not keen on dropping the cash to replace the rear with oem tires. Are there any opinions on replacing only the rear? Any suggestions on what to replace them with? I would like to spend less than $150 each.

I rotate mine. I never get stuck in your situation. Buy 4 at a time.

I didn't rotate because I had to patch one of the rear tires. I didn't feel comfortable putting a patched tire on the front. If the rear blows you can still have some control. If the front blows you are screwed.

Thanks for the comment though. I didn't learn proper tire maintenance in my MBA classes.

I've got 4 oem tires with about 8K miles on them. All the miles were pampered...i.e. normal driving, no racing, burn outs, ect. and garaged the entire time. PM me if you are interested in 2 or all 4

Maybe proper maintenance is included in the PhD courses?

I don't think I'd put a patched tire on the front, either.

It's actually the other way around. Blow a rear tire and the back won't track behind the front: the car may spin out or swap ends. Blow a front tire and you can compensate for the lopsidedness with steering. Won't handle well, but it won't suddenly swap ends.

If a tire is correctly patched and balanced, it will be OK on either end.
