Thanks for all the feedback. I know what you mean about looking small, even though they're the same dimensions as stock -- I think it's that the stock wheels don't have a very well defined lip on them.

There may be some mild lowering in the future. I don't want to do too much, the way roads are around here.

FYI...tirerack has the gt2's on sale now. 18x7.5 is something like $339 and 18x8 is $399. I might pick some up soon.

I checked the clearance on mine: the 18" has 1 inch of clearance at the front calipers, so in theory the 17" should still clear them by 1/2 inch, right? Well, assuming that the 1 inch smaller diameter causes the inside of the rim to be 1/2 inch closer to the hub.

They don't come up in "winter packages" on TireRack, which seems to be the only way to search for 17" wheels for an RX-8. The 17" comps and GT1 are listed, if you're interested in those, or just call and see about the GT2. I wouldn't be surprised if the reps had more info than the site. They knew that the TPMS would fit, for example, even though it wasn't mentioned on the web page.

Hey, thanks! I'm really enjoying them. One unexpected bonus is that they've been really easy to keep clean. The shape is so open and simple that brake dust doesn't have very many places to accumulate.

Next summer: lighter, quieter tires.

I just bought a second set of sensors (from www.finishlineperformance.com) and had them installed when I got the tires mounted. Just make sure that the shop you go to has worked with this kind of stem-mounted pressure sensor before.

There's a procedure in the manual for forcing the system to recognize the new sensors, but I didn't need to use it. (Turning off the key, taking the time to change 4 tires, then turning it on later and driving is pretty much the same procedure they tell you to follow, and I didn't have the old tires next to the car when I started it up.)

A friend of mine has those wheels and they are great. Classic look, light weight, strong, easy to clean. Since my friend already had them and I didnt want to look the same as his I opted out and bought the enkei rpm 1 wheels. 18-8 with 35 off set. d they weight on 1 lb more. price for 4 installed was 1200. Great wheel/good price. Cant go wrong with the ssr's.
